Only days before Britain declares war on Germany, Harry Clifton, hoping to escape the consequences of long-buried family secrets, and forced to accept that his desire to marry Emma Barrington will never be fulfilled, has joined the Merchant Navy. But his ship is sunk in the Atlantic by a German Uboat, drowning almost the entire crew. An American cruise liner, the SS Kansas Star, rescues a handful of sailors, among them Harry and the third officer, an American named Tom Bradshaw.

I'd been waiting for this book, a sequel to "Only Time Will Tell", and I was not disappointed. The readers do a great job of voicing the characters and Archer's plot is suitably complex and engaging. I had many "driveway" moments where I did not want to turn off the car but wanted to hear what happened next. While this is not Jeffrey Archer's best work, and many of the plot points are similar to previous books, he stills knows how to tell a good story.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim. Spring, 1849: Eli McCullough is 13 years old when a marauding band of Comanches takes him captive. Brave and clever, Eli quickly adapts to life among the Comanches, learning their ways and waging war against their enemies, including white men - which complicates his sense of loyalty and understanding of who he is.

This was a great listen. The narrators were excellent and the plot was engaging. The author did a good job of exploring the motivations and challenges facing each generation. A few tips - it is a bit gory so be warned. And if you do listen to the book, go to Amazon and download the geneology chart that is included in the first pages of the printed book. I wish I had done that sooner as it helps to explain the family history.

The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"

I loved this book! I got completely caught up in the world that Ann Leary created. Her characters are totally believeable - flawed, humorous and recognizeable. Mary Beth Hurt's narration is excellent - I always knew who was speaking. This is a book I would listen to again - it's that good.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

I really wanted to like this book but, in the end, I found the main characters so off-putting that I can't honestly recommend it. The audio version is excellent - the readers truly make the characters come alive. And the suspense of the plot is great. But the two main characters prove to be equally despicable. I'd just read another book by Gillian Flynn, "Dark Places", and realize that she might just be a bit too dark for me.
