"Surprising and Refreshing!"
I think Neil Gaiman is a fabulous narrator no matter which roles he takes on. Otherwise, i truly love the character of Katherine who is so naive and lovable and heroic all in one go and she was brought to life really well too.
I can't remember the last time i've read a book which doesn't fit into one of the main trends out there: dystopian, supernatural / vampires / angels etc and was really captivating. Watching the young katherine grown and take on substance in a world of men was fun. The story line is so well written it feels light and bubbly and quirky and charming whilst bringing up tough subjects such as sexual abuse, equal rights, power and responsibility. I'm impressed!
"Fab story!"
Great storyline and well written. Its rare that you find a book that isn't predictable and this is one of them. Its quite rare i give 5 stars either but this one's worth it. I was glad I gave this a listen despite the negative comments on the reader. She does do the male voices a bit oddly but otherwise i think she reads well and a woman is definitely suited to this role as the main character is a woman. If you generally prefer male voices, then check hers out before hand, otherwise, go for it!
There are lots of books out there where the world's gone terribly wrong and the survivors live very different lives from us. Most of them are young adult oriented and though very enjoyable, they do have quite a naive approach to it. And frankly, 15 and 16 years old saving everyone is fun but not very realistic. This one's a dystopian story for adults with grownups failing and succeeding. On the whole very enjoyable! I guess its comparable to Divergent / Insurgent (great books both) but as I said, oriented towards adults.
Yes, I actually went to bed at 6am one day to finish it. Big mistake as of course i had to get up to go to work the next day...
Can't wait to see the next book Hugh Howey's gonna write. Hurry up!
"One of the worst narrators ever!"
The book itself is ok. The style is very basic and quite repetitive but the content is actually interesting. So yes, if the topic interested me.
Change the narrator. His style is so bad that I just wanted to throw my ipod out the window. He completely detracts from the content of the book and makes it unbearable to keep on reading. I have had to move on to another book in between and then return to it in order to actually finish it.
Otherwise, the writing could be less repetitive and more to the point.
He drove me nuts as he cannot go three words without putting a pause in. This makes for terribly un-natural sentences and slow rhythm.
The content boiled down to its essential is actually very interesting. Its probably a lot more compelling when the author is actually lecturing but the content is still useful.
See a lecture, get the book but do not go for the audio-book
