In Night Pleasures, Kyrian of Thrace - an immortal who protects humans from vampires - wakes up one morning handcuffed to the one thing that can scare him: a conservative woman in a button-down shirt. But Amanda Devereaux turns out to be his perfect partner for hunting down a deadly foe, and for helping him to regain his soul and learn that love doesn't have to bite.

Wow...I did not like this book. A friend recommended this book to me and maybe it is better on the printed page, but I did not like the audio version. The narrator was slow and I kept wanting to try to drag the words out of her mouth. Also, the content of the book was just trashy. I am all for a good romance and enjoy urban fantasy, but this was just sex. Not a great plot. No character building. Just characters constantly panting for each other.

"Sadly, death at the races is not uncommon. However, three in a single afternoon was sufficiently unusual to raise more than one eyebrow." It's the third death on Cheltenham Gold Cup Day that really troubles super-sleuth Sid Halley. Last seen in 1995's Come to Grief, former champion jockey Halley knows the perils of racing all too well but, in his day, jockeys didn't usually reach the finishing line with three .38 rounds in the chest.

Under Orders is the third book in Dick Francis' set with Sid Halley as the protagnoist. Under Orders is the first and has Geoffrey Howard as the narrator. Unfortunately Geoffrey Howard died in September of 2014 and I just couldn't get used to Martin Jarvis as Sid Halley's voice. I have listened to other recordings of Dick Francis by Martin Jarvis and haven't had an issue, but, for me, Mr. Howard really captured Sid Halley's voice. I also didn't like how he portrayed Halley's father in law.
The second book with Sid Halley as the protagonist is not on Audible.

It’s amazing what bodily injury can do for a man. A fall from a racehorse left brilliant jockey Sid Halley dangerously depressed, with a wrecked hand and the need for a new career. It was a bullet wound that helped him find one.

Elizabeth Hunter writes so well and this book is tightly written with an excellent plot that moves forward well. Zachary Webber is the perfect narrator for this book. I have listened to him read Easy and Breakable (which are marvelous!) and he continues to be spot on with this book as well. It is so wonderful to have an excellent author paired with a fantastic narrator. I have not listened to Elizabeth Hunter's other series (Elemental Mysteries - but I have read them and they too are wonderful) because of the poor reviews about the narrator. Do not hesitate to buy this book and the follow up book, The Singer, as you will not be disappointed. I am eagerly awaiting the third book in the series that is due out in March.

The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements, where you’re restricted to 2,000 calories of badly flavored soy every day. You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world, or you can join the service. With the colony lottery a pipe dream, Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces for a shot at real food, a retirement bonus, and maybe a ticket off Earth.

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame - whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast.

Holdbrook-Smith is the best narrator I have ever listened to (and I have listened to many!). I was a bit more leary of this book because the other reviews mentioned that it was different from the first three. I am SO glad that I downloaded this book. It is a great book and I completely did not see the ending coming. Ben Aaronovitch is an amazing author. I can't believe I now have to wait for the next book!
