I came across this recording while in search of Dr. Davis' latest book "The Meaning of Freedom: And Other Difficult Dialogues." The last time I saw and "Angela Davis Speaks" recording it had been released in 1971 and I found it on iTunes. Perhaps this updated short performance is Audible's way of "testing the waters" to see if publications by this author will sell. In this age of electronic texts, things written and narrated by thinkers will most assuredly be profitable.
Angela Davis is one of the most important minds in existence today. The ideas and the issues she brings forth are relevant and will cause the listener to pause and rethink their own views. Her life has been spent in the pursuit of justice and her oratory arguments hit their mark time after time.
I would have given this 5 stars overall but the editing of this short narration leaves a bit to be desired. This recording is a series of topics (ideas) that have been culled from speeches Angela has given. The problem is that the segue between the topics (or ideas) is choppy so that the recording does not flow as it should. Granted this may have been acceptable back in 1971 when the original "Angela Speaks" was recorded, today the listener expects a recording that is tad amount to actually being in the lecture or performance hall with the orator.
Overall I enjoyed the recording and would purchase it again.
Love, Love, Love the book! Hate, Hate, Hate the performance. The author's voice is not trained in speaking at all (sorry but it is true.) I finally purchased it in hb from Amazon so I could actually enjoy the AMAZING wealth of knowledge I gained from reading the book. WONDERFUL book, HORRIBLE performance.
I have to admit that I was hesitant because I had read about the amount of cursing in this book but was happy to discover that this translated into nothing more than the word "effing". I have a habit of listening to a book while doing things around the loft...with this book I found myself standing in one place for long stretches of time so I wouldn't miss a single word. What a great story. That makes it a winner for me!
To be honest if you are a fan of Bill Maher and you like the sound of his voice then you will find this enjoyable. I think that sometimes an audience will read too much into a performance. Bill is a comedian and I find his spin on things to reverberate my own ideas the majority of the time. It was like being at one of his stand up performances. Enjoyable and most assuredly Bill.
