What can I say?! I really enjoyed this one, and it was really odd to see old McGee going through an entire adventure without winding up in bed with ANY of the female characters! He didn't even get shot or stabbed this time around either! But it was still a great story!

I got hooked on the Travis McGee books this year and have now gone through all 21. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one. This one was a bittersweet experience because I knew it would be the last. As usual, the writing and characterizations were superb, and the plot kept me guessing. The ending was somewhat unexpected, but it was so much better than what I had feared. Yes, without any spoilers, it has a happy ending. If you like the earlier ones, you’ll love this one.

I've been looking forward to this book for a very long time, perhaps too long. My expectations were sky high. I'm glad that I re-read The Passage before I started this one, although there was enough of a recap of The Passage at the beginning that people who have not read The Passage will still enjoy the book. Personally, I was just a little disappointed. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this one just didn’t grab me like the first one did. Perhaps it had to do with the fact that there was only one narrator this time, or that this was a substantially shorted book. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the third installment.

This one pulls out all the stops. You've never seen Travis like this, but you always knew he had it in him. This one kind of picks up where the previous one, “The Empty Copper Sea” left off, so make sure you have read that one first. This one really changes things for Travis. There are only three more novels left, and it looks like Travis is moving into the modern age of terrorism we all live with today. Savor this one, only three more to go….

I thought I had it all figured out. I knew who the bad guy was. Then it all changed! This one was a very good read (listen?) and well worth the time. You do need to know that some of the characters and plotlines from this one will be continued in the next one - The Green Ripper. So, if you are not reading them in order, make sure you read this one before the next one. An excellent book, with a great ending!

I read Legacy of Heorot when it first came out and I loved it! Through the years it has become my absolute favorite novel. I think I’ve read it six times at least. I’ve bought numerous copies to give as gifts, and recommended it to many of my friends. In fact, I’ve always hoped it would become a trilogy of movies – it’s laid out perfectly for that.
When Beowulf’s Children came out, I jumped on it immediately, but it was a huge let-down. No spoilers, but I hated the way the characters that I had come to know and love were treated, and one basic premise simply sucked.
This book really needed a team of narrators to do it justice and Tom Weiner was just not up to the job. Nothing against him, I’ve loved what he did with other Larry Niven books, but he simply didn’t have enough different voices to do the job on this ensemble cast of characters. His version of Carlos, one of my favorite characters, went all over the map, and he went from sounding like an Australian trying to fake a Spanish accent, to a whining inner-city Yankee reading a bus schedule.
The story is still excellent and worth your time, but I would encourage you to actually read rather than deal with this narration. It’s really no surprise to me that there have been so many bad reviews of this great book. The narration simply ruins the story.

One of the original cautionary tales. Beautifully written and beautifully narrated. Some of the images will stay in your mind for the rest of your life. I particularly liked the introduction by Connie Willis. Great job!

I thought I knew this story, but I was wrong. As the classics go, this one was wonderful. I truly enjoyed the story and the narration. Great job!

At least he didn't get shot this time! This one was tough on our hero. Very personal involvments and a lot of back-story. As usual the characters are all fullly fleshed out and the overall story was great. But I never thought I'd hear Travis singing the praises of a Pulsar LED digital watche!!! Perhaps the next one will mention what a stupid idea they were.....

I really enjoyed this one. The narration was great and now I think I have a better appreciation for the Holmes fans. I did have to start making a list of things to look up though, such as Dog Cart, Fullers Earth, Hansom (As opposed to handsome) etc. I guess I'll have to find Volume Two soon....

This one was all over the map, but the bad guy is truly evil and keeps out-smarting poor Travis. Meyer takes his lumps and almost pays the ultimate price as Travis confronts his own mortality.
