I would recommend the book, but not as an audio book. Why is it that readers assume we want a book read like a bad PBS skit just because it is a history book? Why nations fail is a well researched, interesting piece of work. Dan Woren reads it like a Mass in Latin, boring, monotone, painful. Please, please, please, find someone to read it that will not put me to sleep while I drive!
Methuselah's Children is a great example of the brilliance of RAH. I am a fan of all his work, beginning with "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" and ending with the latest on I've read, "Farhnam's Freehold". RAH is a master of social commentary wrapped in amazing narrative and interesting characters. He did have an "ahead of his time" view on societal norms and taboos, specially sex, so be forewarned that no subject is taboo in his writings.
Methuselah's Children is the first on the series. Read, "Time enough for love" for the next installment. For the complete story line, you should read:
Time Enough for Love
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Unrelated story line that is returned to later.
Stranger in a Strange Land. Unrelated but needed later.
The Number of the Beast. There are rumors that this one was not written by RAH but by his wife. Style is very different although story and characters are brought together from "time enough for love" , "Moon is a harsh mistress" and "Stranger in a strange land".
To Sail Beyond the Sunset. The final chapter of the series
I read God's War, the first book in this series and when I saw that Audible had Infidel I jumped at the chance. I should have listened to the sample first. Kameron Hurley is a brilliant writer who takes you on a fast ride thru a dark and bloody desert world. The problem is not the book, the problem is the reader. She sounds like a stripper named Candy in a film noir story. It is high pitched, grating and painfully annoying. Perhaps, if I were listening to the three little bears and was five years old this voice would have been appropriate. No, not even then. Definitely not for a story about female assassins. If I could get my credit back, trust me I would.
Audible please read the books before you select the reader. This is a "big person" book and needs a grown woman as a reader.
