Although born to rule, Aidan lives as a scribe in a remote Irish monastery on the far, wild edge of Christendom. Secure in work, contemplation, and dreams of the wider world, a miracle bursts into Aidan's quiet life. He is chosen to accompany a small band of monks on a quest to the fabled city of Byzantium, where they are to present the beautiful and costly hand-illuminated Book of Kells to the emperor of all Christendom.

    "great story, blah reader"
    Overall

I was sorely disappointed in the reading of this saga. All the characters were delivered in angry or gruff voices, and there was very little vocal difference between the many characters with little or no inflection. When the characters were in Constantinople and Arabia they sounded strangely East Indian, not Turkish, Persian, or Arabian.

I had "wish listed" all the volumes in this series, but as they are all narrated by Mr. Langdon I don't think I'll download them. It's too bad because I loved the story and characters, and I assume the following volumes are just as interesting, but it was so terribly difficult to stay focused while listening to the monotone narrator that I just can't imagine listening to him again.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator had trouble with the simplest words, stumbled over sentences, and had a boring, matter-of-fact style throughout. And just forget (wish I could) the Irish brogue! With stories of fairy kings, passionate sex, and rollicking Irish personalities, matter-of-fact is NOT the way to approach this story.

Too bad Susan Erickson didn't narrate this trilogy! I ordered the following books on my Kindle so I could enjoy the stories without cringing at the narration.

  • The Edge of Desire: A Bastion Club Novel

They proved their bravery fighting for His Majesty’s Secret Service and were rewarded with brides of great beauty and breeding. But one member of the Bastion Club has remained a bachelor - until now. "Christian, I need your help. There is no one else I can turn to…L.” When Christian Allardyce, sixth Marquess of Dearne, reads those words, his world turns upside down. Lady Letitia Randall is a woman like no other, and the day he left her behind to fight for king and country was the most difficult of his life.

Would you listen to The Edge of Desire again? Why?

Yes, because I love the series.

What three words best describe Steven Crossley’s voice?

    Deep

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

The level of passion achieved by Simon Prebble is missing from this reading. And what I found most annoying (and this happens in a lot of series) is that the names are not pronounced correctly, or even the same, from book to book. Dalziel is pronounced "DL," which while confounding, is worth knowing because throughout the latter part of this book and (unfortunately I now find) will continue in the next book in the series, I will cringe every time I hear the name mispronounced. What do the directors of these recordings do if not make certain names and all other words are pronounced correctly? It does ruin the reading for me.

Miss Dorothea Darent has no intention of ever getting married, certainly not to a rogue such as the Marquis of Hazelmere. A disreputable scoundrel, he is captivated when they meet by chance and is determined to win her heart, even while she's busy dazzling the rest of London society. Now Dorothea has a choice to make: stick with her plan to remain a respectable spinster, or run into the arms of her dashing stranger.

I have enjoyed listening my way through the Bastion Club and Cynster novels (more than once), and was excited to start the Regency novels, but absolutely could NOT listen to this narration. After 15 minutes I was done. There is just no way to become involved with a recorded book's plot or characters when the narration is below par. I immediately downloaded the book on my Kindle, so I could enjoy the story.

In my opinion, Simon Prebble should narrate all the Laurens books.
