Would you listen to Jack of Diamonds again? Why?

I will keep this book and read again because I like the character. The story talks of a period of time and changes in the countries during the mid 1900's. This will also be one of the last books that one of my favorite authors.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked all the female characters. Jack, main character is stable boy to man who lives through some difficult plans without feeling sorry for himself but he does get incredible support from loved ones.

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Was surprised how the book focus so little on the 1 generation from the 1 first of the sequal. Winter of World really covers a differant period (WW2) and again from the young adult, children, of the 1st book characters. Daisy grew the most. Vernon & Carla were the most steady.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

Really enjoyed the performance. Amazing reading of the British, Russian and American accepts to help picture characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had moments of laughter and shead the odd tear. Was mostly moved with tension listening to the implications to varying political decisions and practical responses. The world has seen such simaltanious varying civilian treatments!

It is 1962: the height of the Cold War and only months after the building of the Berlin Wall. Alec Leamas is a hard-working, hard-drinking British intelligence officer whose East Berlin network is in tatters. His agents are either on the run or dead, victims of the ruthlessly efficient East German counter-intelligence officer Hans-Dieter Mundt.

When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

JK character development was well done & maybe based on personal experience. Usually there are good and bad persons in a story that balance each other but I found the balance really very negative. Expectations were a positive read (After Harry) but found this book a tragedy.

    Any additional comments?

Narrator did a good job of reading. Continued to that end of the book because it was an audible, I would have put the book down if I needed the engergy to read.
