I really have enjoyed Gibsons older stuff but with Pattern Recognition and even more with Spook Country the guy just meanders too much. I'm half way through and I find I don't really care about any of the characters, don't really understand the plot and am having a really tough time hanging in there. Gibson's writing continues to be unique and often engaging but it keeps leading nowhere in this story. Also the plain old modern setting isn't nearly as exciting as the bleak future stuff in my opinion. William, if you're reading this I'm sorry man... I just don't get it.
I loved this book. I have some Atheist friends and it's good to have some of their arguments examined by a scholar like D'Souza. He takes them seriously and argues honestly which is what I try to do. I only wish I could get them to take my questions and points with the same amount of openness and respect. If you're a believer, this book will bolster your faith. If you're agnostic, this book will challenge you and help you understand where us Christians are coming from. If you're an atheist or an angry atheist you'd be hard pressed to find a more cogent commentary on the whole faith/science debate from a Christian perspective. It may be worth at least understanding that as you continue your conversations with believing friends or frienemies.
The writing is ok. The plot is ok. The characters are ok. It's just all around ok. Perhaps better for people looking for a young adult fiction without too much violence or complicated plotting. It's just no where near something like King's Dark Tower series or A Game Of Thrones. Oh well... I may just be old and jaded when it comes to fantasy stuff. It's really hard to find something new that I love.
I've been going through some family health crisis stuff lately and I find that's Drout's lectures are so fascinating they are the one thing that can completely take my mind off my problems. I started with his lecture on Anglo Saxon stuff and was delighted to find this one when I finished. I downloaded and saved it for a day I expected to get some bad news. Sure enough... it was bad but like magic this lecture kept my mind occupied for hours on end and left me in a good mood. I didn't realize there would be so much on The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings my two favorite books of all time. I've no interest whatever in poetry and writing but I'm thinking about getting those lectures too. The guy is just so enthusiastic about the material. What a treasure!
After being bored to tears slogging my way through Goodkind, Robert Jordan, and the Game of Thrones guy along with countless others I'd pretty much decided that my love for fantasy must have just fizzled out in my late 20's. Boy am I glad I decided to give it one more shot. I'd never heard of this book or the author but with the good reviews and one more book balance this month I thought "What the heck, one more shot" WOW was I blown away. This guy is just amazing. Unique story, unusual characters, great setting, pacing, plot twists. I can't quite put my finger on any one thing. It's just magic. And the narration! I don't know what the 3 star reviewer was smoking but this is simply the best. I wish all fantasy books we're brought to life by this talented group of actors. Mad, MAD props to Philip!! He brought the magic back!!
My wife found this one for me since she knows I'm such a LOTR fan. It was a nice supprise since I had no idea the guy even wrote a book. We listened to it on a road trip and I was immediately swept up in the narritive. I found Seans story to be absolutely facinating!! If you loved the movies and particulary if you loved Sam you will really enjoy this book. Seans humility, honesty and openeness about his experiences in making the movies go far beyond what I expected to find. I finished it in two sittings. Bravo Sean!! Great book!!!
I am a new Christian. I got the King James version and it was good but kept putting me to sleep. The Message on the other hand is so good it's hard to stop listening! The reader narrates with all the enthusiam of Tony Robbins which I think is a good thing. This version of the Bible truely breaths new life into stories and letters I've heard since I was a child. The language is easy to understand without changing the story. It is powerful and wonderful and an absolute joy to listen to! This one will stay on my IPOD for life!!!
