A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

As fresh today as when it was written. Not a plot-driven story, but a rich, rewarding listen about life in turn-of-the-century Brooklyn, as well as a warm and endearing coming-of-age story of young Francie. Could not be more delightful. Couldn't stop listening! Try it, you'll like it.

In this delightful tale by New York Times best-selling author Ann B. Ross, America's favorite senior citizen determines to reunite two troubled souls before it's too late. Miss Julia reckons Mr. J.D. Pickens is the key to solving all of Hazel Marie's problems, especially the female kind. But how can Miss Julia coax the savvy PI back to town - and back into the arms of her 40-something friend Hazel Marie?

    Overall

Perhaps one of the best of Ross' "Miss Julia" books, full of twist and turns, southern old-style charm we fans have come to adore. I would easily have given this 4 stars but for the narrator, who makes men sound like they are billy goat gruffs, and the children sound like they are toddlers, and worst of all, Miss Julia sound sing-songy and fake. If you want to hear a truly great narrator handle one of the Miss Julia books, try "Miss Julia Paints the Town, narrated by Claudia Hughes. Hughes' voice contains the nuances of each personality as they were written by Ross. In an audiobook, the narrator can make or break a story. It's only my deep love and affection for "Miss Julia" that made me download this book, knowing that even Cynthia Darlow couldn't ruin the story for me. But then, I had to listen to one of the earlier books narrated by Claudia Hughes to get the Darlow voices out of my head. If you can hack the narrator, the story is terrific.

In the heart of the California gold country, three-year-old Sarah McKensie is orphaned by a stagecoach robber and then adopted and nursed by a she-wolf in this playful homage to the American tall tale. As she matures, Sarah learns to assist her pack by contributing human tools to the hunt and, eventually, interacting with humans. With her best friend and pack-sister, Beka, at her side, Sarah becomes a local legend: the Wild Angel of the Sierras, rescuer of imperiled travelers.

I was hesitant to invest in a book not aimed at the adult market, but I'm so glad I did. This has to be one of the best books I've ever read. The author's writing is superb--excellent pacing, beautiful descriptive language, and an intriguing story. I simply could not stop listening to this book, once I got started. If I have one complaint, it's that I missed a whole night's sleep because I could not stop listening to it all night long.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, two men meet in a smoky stairwell of the World Trade Center. One is Eric Michaels, a driven financial manager from Los Angeles who has been busy climbing the corporate ladder, often at the expense of his wife and young son. The other is Jake Bryan, a New York City fireman devoted to his wife and daughter. In the midst of the crisis, Eric falls on the stairs and Jake stops to help him up. The two men freeze momentarily, stunned by the uncanny resemblance between them.

Oh, why didn't I read the customer reviews of this book before purchasing it? I normally do, but the description of this book by Audible was so enticing, I opted to just buy it without further research. What a mistake!

As other readers have written, there is no warning in the book's description that this is wholly a Christian book, that Jesus permeates every paragraph.

Obviously this is not a problem for those who desire to read Christian slanted books. But I felt broadsided.
If you enjoy reading that the main characters discussed the (and I quote) lack of evidence supporting the theory of evolution, and feel that creationism tells the whole story, then by all means, you'll likely enjoy this book.

The premise of the story is quite good; the writing is not bad. But the constant preaching is truly annoying to those who did not expect--from the Audible description of this book--that this was a heavily weighted pro-Christian tome.

The widow Liza Romero came to Wrangell, Alaska, for solitude and a chance to reinvent herself. Now, in her old wooden halibut schooner, Salmon Eye, she ferries library books and groceries across Steamer Bay. One day her first-mate Sam - part labrador, part red hound - spots the body of a small, nearly drowned Tlingit boy, marooned on a rock. They rescue the boy and take him to Wrangell, only to discover the body of a very old native man. Then someone on a mist-shrouded boat starts shooting at them.

I had no idea I would enjoy this book so much. Full of the rich flavor of Alaska, this mystery-thriller combines heart, wisdom and excitement so well that I didn't want the book to end. Reminiscent of Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series, "Crow in Stolen Colors" features another strong, independent, indigenous woman full of grace and grit, and takes us on a wild ride through the Alaskan wilderness. I hope this is the first of many in what would make a great series of mystery books. I enjoyed this book immensely, and must say the narrator was beyond excellent, doing Native dialects with great authenticity. A wonderful listen! Don't be afraid to give this one a try--it's well worth a credit!
