With an ailing mother to care for, Lisa Grant takes the first job she can find: research assistant to District Attorney Scott Buchanan. What Lisa expects to be a mind-numbingly boring task turns into anything but when a missing-persons case draws her attention. The details of the case are engrossing: an entire family — father, mother, and two children — disappeared without a trace more than 28 years ago. Except that’s not all: the mother in a photo Lisa finds could be her own twin.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Take my review with a grain of salt because I only heard about 3 hours worth before I gave up. Like others who gave low ratings have said (I wish I'd listened), this author goes on and on and on with needless and totally uninteresting details about mundane and uninteresting scenes and events. It reminds me of the books my high school English teacher used to make us read, not for the plot but for appreciation of the language. Yeah, nice language, nice vivid description, nice prose, but boring, boring, boring.

Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon at a mission hospital in Addis Ababa. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and their father's disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Yet it will be love, not politics - their passion for the same woman - that will tear them apart.

Sorry, but I just don't share the majority opinion of this book. Half way through this very long book, the two main characters are still infants (!), and nothing has happened to generate interest in them or the other characters. Usually with boring audiobooks I stick it out to the end, but I just couldn't take the boredom of this one beyond the half-way point. Take this review with a grain of salt since I didn't finish the book, but make sure you know what you're getting into before you spend a credit on it.

When notorious investigative journalist Rhoda Gradwyn booked into an exclusive clinic in Dorset for the removal of a disfiguring facial scar, she had every prospect of a successful operation by a distinguished surgeon, followed by a week's peaceful convalescence in one of Dorset's most beautiful manor houses and the beginning of a new life. She was never to leave Cheverell Manor alive.

    "Boring and Disappointing"
    Overall

This ostensible whodunit became a who-cares-who-dun-it. The author needed much more character development and much less description of every detail in rooms, offices, and other settings. It was hard to care about the victim, the investigator, or any of the suspects. The best part was the end -- not the ending, "The End."
