A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified "dinery server" on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation: the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history.

...and my very favorite audiobook. I had already read the book three times when I listened to it, and was delighted that I learned and noticed new twists and details about the story, characters and 'meta-story'. The performances are perfect.

I'm a little bit envious of those who haven't yet read or listened to this book - there's nothing else like it, and you're in for an engrossing, entertaining, and transformative experience. Seriously.

It is the late 21st century, and due to the economic breakdown and rising crime rate, nearly every citizen has fled Toronto. The city is a slum, populated by the homeless, the poor, and criminals like Rudy, who uses the power of voodoo to help him control the booming drug market. But also left behind are people like Ti-Jeanne, who hope to use voodoo to help rebuild the city, even as Canada's privileged population turns to Toronto to begin harvesting human organs.

The writing is brilliant, the characters powerful, the narration masterful. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book, and this performance. I am sad that it's over!

"Ninety-five days, and then I'll be safe. I wonder whether the procedure will hurt. I want to get it over with. It's hard to be patient. It's hard not to be afraid while I'm still uncured, though so far the deliria hasn't touched me yet. Still, I worry. They say that in the old days, love drove people to madness. The deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't."

    Story

The writing is luminous and expressive and cross-sensory, the characters real and compelling, the storyline tight and exciting. These might be YA characters, but Ms Oliver never dumbs down a single word.

The narration is enjoyable, engaging and believable, with just enough differentiation between characters to be able to follow the story, and never gets in its own way.

I discovered this book by downloading the sample first chapter in the "Tournament of Audiobooks" and will be forever grateful to Audible for introducing me to an author and cast of characters I'll never forget.
