  • The Handmaid's Tale

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs)
    • By Margaret Atwood
    • Narrated By Claire Danes
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Emily - Audible says: "My Top Pick for 2012"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Handmaid's Tale to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version of this book, but Clare Danes's interpretation captivated me on so many levels. In her hands, I enjoyed this book probably more than I would have had I read it myself. I would absolutely recommend this audio book to fans of the print book.

What other book might you compare The Handmaid's Tale to and why?

I hesitate to say this, but I would compare it to the Hunger Games. The writing is far better in this book and it's a different style altogether, but the dark tone is the same, and the premises for both books is similar. I would say this book would suit those who might want a more literary version of The Hunger Games.

What does Claire Danes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It was so interesting to listen to the story as if Clare Danes was speaking to me as Offred. I believed her so much, it was almost creepy! I'm also finding it's hard to move on to other audio books because Clare Danes was such an exceptional narrator.

If you could take any character from The Handmaid's Tale out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Offred. I want to know what happened to her.

    Any additional comments?

I can't stop thinking about this book, and I've actually started listening to it for a second time. It's one of those stories that stays with you.

  • Insurgent: Divergent, Book 2

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Veronica Roth
    • Narrated By Emma Galvin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

One choice can transform you - or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Lore says: "Decent but not as interesting as Divergent"
    "A bit disappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I was hoping this book would be as engaging as the first one, and I was very disappointed. This one failed to keep my interest. Also I was hoping there would be a big reveal at the end or something to make me eager to read the next installment, but the end was not shocking and it didn't leave me wanting more.

Would you ever listen to anything by Veronica Roth again?

I would listen to something by Veronica Roth again, but as for this series I think I'm done with it.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Emma Galvin?

Emma Galvin did a solid job with the narration; she captured the tone very well and if I weren't so disinterested in the story itself, I would have enjoyed this more.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I did listen to this book all the way through, so it must have kept my interest enough for me to keep going. I though it was interesting to learn more about Tobias's parents, although I found their characters to be a bit flat for the most part.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Grant says: "It's not for me. Loved it anyway."
    "Not bad"
Would you listen to Divergent again? Why?

I wouldn't listen to Divergent again, although I did enjoy it and it kept my interest. I enjoy this genre, and I liked the concept in this book. I was excited to come back to it and I blew through it pretty quickly.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending of this book made me want to dive right into the second book. I downloaded it right away.

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin – was your favorite?

In my mind, Emma Galvin was the protagonist, Tris. Tris is tough but still vulnerable, and she is constantly evaluating her instincts and changing her behavior to fit each situation.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoyed the moment at the choosing ceremony where Tris chooses a new faction. Even though you kind of see it coming, the tension leading up to it kept me interested.

    Any additional comments?

This was my first download on audible, and I really enjoyed it.
