Tensions are rising in the Middle East. Iran’s president vows to annihilate the United States and Israel. Israel’s prime minister says someone must hit Iran’s nuclear sites “before it’s too late.” The American president warns against a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities and says negotiations are the key to finding peace. And amid it all, rumors are swirling throughout the region of a mysterious religious cleric claiming to be the Islamic messiah.

Mike From Mesa says: "An almost perfect book, with one caveat"
    "Definitely not the last!"
    Overall

This was a great book, good narration that kept the suspense level until the very last 30 minutes. A couple twists and then....cliff hanger! Frustrating ending but the good news is the sequel will be out in October per the author's website. I will definitely be reading the next one.

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

What did you like about this audiobook?

I would recommend this book to a friend because I would like to discuss the last 3 hours of the audiobook with another person who had read it. The first 6 hours of the book were spent wondering exactly what the story line was, the second 6 hours were spent deciding if I really wanted to keep listening to this book. Finally, by the 3rd download I was committed and enjoying the book. The meat of the story is in the 4th download and in the end it was worth the 32 hours spent listening.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

The writing of the author is very descriptive which at times was tedious. In the end, she does provide some very thought provoking insights which would make for excellent book group discussions.

Do you have any additional comments?

This is a good listen, narrator was very good and the writing was good. Was it worth 32 hours of my time? probably not, because the same story could have been told in at least 1/2 of the time. That said, it is still a book worth reading and will provide excellent book group discussion for years to come.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

I loved this book, the narrators definitely brought the characters to life. I will be recommending it to my book group. I found myself rearranging my day to make time to listen. The ending was a disappointment but leaves plenty of room for a sequel.
