In Sins of the Fathers, Susan Howatch takes the reader into the world of the very rich, a family divided from generation to generation by a great fortune and the consequences of a terrible secret that lies at the very heart of their wealth.

    "Addictive!"
    Overall

This is not a book of high literature but material for the afternoon soap opera's -- like the " ... Housewives". There are some dialogues on classic literature and philosophy but those are not worth much. I like to listen to books that grab me immediately, that do not require any mental exertion and this is one of them.

I chose to listen to this book because of the reader, Robert Whifield. He is one of the best narrators, I think. I did find the voices of Cornelius and Jake a little tiresome, but they mesh into the story quite well. Whitfield sounds best in his own voice, of course. He is excellent. I am going to listen to "Churchill" read by him next. A definitely more challenging work than this book, but am looking forward to it.

Anna Karenina is beautiful, married to a successful man, and has a son whom she adores. But a chance meeting at a train station in Moscow sets her passionate heart alight, and she is defenceless in the face of Count Vronsky's adoration. Having defied the rules of nineteenth-century Russian society, Anna is forced to pay a heavy price.

If you could sum up Anna Karenina in three words, what would they be?

    Take it slowly.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator sounded hysterical whenever doing women's voices -- and a greater portion of the story is in women's dialogues. I can't take it any more. I am going to return this version and get David Horwitch's (sp?) version. This narrator has got rave reviews.

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

    Branden says: "Phenomenallly detailed..."
    "Boring and highly contrived."
    Overall

That pretty much sums it up. To think of intellectualizing Dracula!!! Poor thing. Should leave him to likes of Stoker whose book chilled me to the bones (which is read by my favorite narrator, Robert Whitfield)!

  • Spandau Phoenix

The Spandau Diary -- what was in it? Why did the secret intelligence agencies of every major power want it? Why was a brave and beautiful woman kidnapped to get it? Why did a chain of deception and violent death lash out across the globe, from survivors of the Nazi past to warriors in this new conflict about to explode? Why did the world's entire history of World War II have to be rewritten as the future hung over a nightmare abyss?

    Corinne says: "Excellent and intense"
    "Awful narrator"
    Overall

The story was interesting enough, but the narrator was most tiresome. I hope he returns to his day job, whatever it is! The accents were terrible, Hitler constantly sounded as if he was about to burst his blood vessels. The British accent, which seems to come easily to most Americans, was unrecognizable. And, the Indian accent...!!! Sounded nothing like even a parody of accents! This is the only book I have listened to at double the speed. Pity the author!
    Awful.

Vikram Chandra's novel draws the reader deep into the life of Inspector Sartaj Singh - and into the criminal underworld of Ganesh Gaitonde, the most wanted gangster in India. Sartaj, one of the very few Sikhs on the Mumbai police force, is used to being identified by his turban, beard and the sharp cut of his trousers. But "the silky Sikh" is now past 40, his marriage is over, and his career prospects are on the slide.

Alberta says: "The book is fantastic, but the reading isn't great"
    "Awful reading"
    Overall

The reading is simply awful -- monotonic, everybody sounds the same, and the reader has a strange accent. I just had to stop listening to it and buy the book as the story is interesting.

Interesting characters -- especially the heroine -- makes it an interesting read/listen. The resolution of the mystery is thoroughly surprising.
