A light and fun listen. Very funny and worth your time, especially if you are a Mom!
This book is good, but not great. I just finished 3 audio selections by Brene Brown and they were soooo wonderful, this one (although different) pales. (The best of Brene's was "The Power of Vulnerability" speech, fabulous!) Glennon was an ok narrator, at first I really did not like her voice and thought they should have hired a professional. The emotion in her voice sounds controlled, like she is reading instead of telling a story. I did get used to her narration. Glennon tells some deep stories I think every Mom can relate to - that's what kept me listening and they are good stories. She talks a lot about God. I am a Christian as well, but sometimes I thought it was too much and over the top. The overall theme of the book is to forgive yourself and move on, a good theme. One we all need to be reminded of since we are hardest on ourselves.
I loved this talk. I have listened to, "The Gifts of Imperfection," "Daring Greatly," and her 2 hour talk on parenting. I think this talk is the best overall. If you only buy one of her downloads, I would buy this one. She covers all the topics in the other books. The format is great, Brene is a brilliant speaker. When you listen, it sounds like she is talking to you personally, not to a room full of people. (You can hear people laugh and clap, but the audio is recorded well and it is not annoying.) A great listen! One I will refer to many times when I need some guidance and an extra boost of confidence. Thanks Brene!
I loved this book! Great story, great narration! I was hooked! This is my favorite Ann Patchett novel behind, "State of Wonder." I also really like "The Magician's Assistant," but this one is better. Happy listening!
I really wanted to like this book as I heard several very funny interviews with Caitlin Moran before downloading the book. She is witty, a great writer and a fab narrator. (You can't say that about all authors!) I found the second half of the book to be better than the first. I enjoyed hearing about her family and upbringing, but got bored (and was not interested in) hearing about when she started her period, first had sex, etc. There are some predictable parts, that I wish were left out, as feminism lit. has beaten these topics to death. The second half of the book was better. Overall, it was ok, but not a home run.
I loved this book, even cried at the end it was so good. I love how the story is constructed, the author weaving his own stories in with the adventures of the main character. Also, the narrator is brilliant! I listened to this in two sittings, didn't want to go to sleep. :-) This one is a must listen!
This book is probably better read as a hard copy. I "returned it" after listening for about an hour because the narration was really annoying. I loved "Wild" and really wanted to like this book as well. Cheryl reads the answer to every question pausing for emphasis way too often. It is as if - every. single. thing. she. says. is. so. very. important... Narrated like a state of the union address. She also inserts a lot of terms of endearment (such as "sweetpea") a little too often and at inappropriate times, which was also annoying. After listening to a lot of books with great narrators, I just could not listen anymore. Also, the book deals with some heavy subject matters (such as abuse, etc.) and I started to feel depressed.
No, please, just don't. The ending was terrible...
I really liked how the plot of this book was so intricately woven around (mostly) interesting characters. The first 75% of the book is very good and kept me listening. The narrators were excellent!! Near the end of the book, something quite silly happens and then… it’s as if the writer got sick of the story, or didn’t know what else to write. I thought the ending was terrible, completely unbelievable. What was the editor thinking?? I really liked the vast majority of this book and kept thinking about how I can’t wait to see the movie when it comes out. After I finished the book, I am no longer interested in seeing the movie. The end was such a let-down given the strength and weight of the rest of the book. I felt cheated as a listener.
