This is one of my favorite Elmore Leonard books. The characters are so well developed they feel real by the end of the book. The story flowed well and really held my interest.
My highest praise goes to the narrator. As a native Oklahoman, I tire of fake southern accents which are more ridicule than reality. Arliss Howard gets the accent spot-on. The only way to fully experience this book is by listening to it as read by Arliss Howard.
Having been a fan of Kathy's books from the first, I anxiously await each new book from her. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed in "Cross Bones". It is a blatant but inadequate attempt to jump on the "The Da Vinci Code" bandwagon.
Kathy labors so hard to make the various plot points sound plausible you can actually sense her breaking into a sweat. I found myself looking forward to the end of the book. I was actually checking the player to see how much more of this I had to listen to.
I am sorry to advise, don't waste your money or your valuable time on this one. There are too many other wonderful titles available on Audible.
This book succeeds in what it is: a mystery/thriller book that will hold your attention. However, I was distracted by the contradictions presented by the main character. He held a deep concern about catching the killer before he killed again, but would repeatedly drive over 80 mph while talking on the phone and reading a file. At times he would look up to discover he was driving at high speeds in the middle of the highway.
It was amazing that someone so concerned about saving one future murder victim would put entire car loads of people in such risk. There was a much greater chance of him killing a soccer Mom and all her charges than the killer murdering one more person.
I know that I'm being picky here, it just seemed like this behavior would be out of character for someone who was otherwise so concerned for his fellow man. Other than that the book was fine.
