The second annual Best Business Stories of the Year edition continues the excellence and comprehensive range of this fascinating anthology series. Featuring pieces from The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Fortune, Harper's, and Wired.

    Jonathan says: "Good Stuff"
    "Who Picked These Stories?"
    Overall

This was like being read beadtime stories from a Newsweek magazine. In my opinion these are hardly the best business stories of the year and of little value as an audible option.

People today wrestle with all sorts of financial dilemmas, from paying for their kids' education to making mortgage payments to investing for retirement to putting some money aside to spend now. Pond, the father of three lively daughters and the most successful fund-raiser in PBS history, knows what it's like to juggle myriad financial demands at once. He delivers clear, essential, and easy-to-apply secrets for people ready to get serious about their finances.

Michael says: "Great for some, but not for all"
"Who is this book written for?"
    Overall

Not sure who the audience for this book is supposed to be, but with sage wisdom like "just because you like Japanese food does not mean you should open a sushi restaurant", I'm not any more enlightened than when I started the book.

To achieve sustained competitive advantage, you must create and deliver something that's valuable, rare, and hard to imitate: and you can't do that with a run-of-the-mill workforce. Your workforce needs to be strikingly different, and obsessively focused on delivering on your unique value proposition. Compared with everyone else's workforce, your people need to be downright strange.

    Lynn says: "Very Disappointing"
    "Strangely Uninteresting"
    Overall

Have to agree with Lynn's review. I listened to the entire book and there is nothing new here. In fact, some of it is a bit insulting, like build relationships with your customer... "we tell jokes to our customers"...how trite!

Life's Greatest Lessons is a wise, wonderful audiobook. In it Hal Urban, a parent and an award-winning teacher, presents 20 principles that are as deeply rooted in common sense as they are in compassion. The topics, gathered from a lifetime of teaching both children and adults, span a wide range of readily understood concepts, including attitudes about money, understanding the real meaning of "success," and the importance of having fun.

    Jason says: "Great audio Book!"
    "Master of the Obvious"
    Overall

His points are so basic they are insulting. For example "you can change your attitude", "think with an open mind" an oh yeah, "be honest". There isn't anything very insightful here.

Drawing on unprecedented interviews with former Wal-Mart executives and a wealth of staggering dataincluding facts such as this: Americans spend $36 million an hour at Wal-Mart stores, this text is an intimate look at a business that is dramatically reshaping the American economy.

    Michael says: "Excellent, Balanced View"
    "LOOK OUT!"
    Overall

This Walmart truck swerves all over the road! More than you ever wanted to know in unrelenting detail about Snapper lawnmowers and salmon farming in Chile. This book is bloated an noth worth your time.

This audio program is a brilliant analysis of the tsunami of globalism. And it is especially relevant in the face of protests against the World Trade Organization and the struggles facing a backward Syria without Haffez Assad. Download and start listening.

    Greg says: "Insightful"
    "Silly-Oversimplified-Outdated"
    Overall

I listened to this and walked away with nothing. He uses over examples like American gas stations and MacDonalds to draw economic and political conclusions which I find oversimplified and far fetched.

One of the rare novels about math and philosophy with almost universal appeal, Flatland is simultaneously a brilliant parody of Victorian society and a fictional guide to the concepts of relativity and the multiple dimensions of space.

Brian says: "Loved all the concepts of this book"
    "Wierd!"

Interesting concept, but unless you have a good understanding of geometry it will be tough to grasp this story. It seemed to me to be "Pointless" (pun intended)

    "Banal"
    Overall

Not much new here, in fact it is a rehash of better read books like FutureShock and books written by Tom Peters'. The narration itself puts one in combat with the desire to nod off and the interspersed dialog from Bill himself adds little. Don't waste your time.
