Julie Orringer's astonishing first novel, eagerly awaited since the publication of her heralded best-selling short-story collection, How to Breathe Underwater, is a grand love story set against the backdrop of Budapest and Paris, an epic tale of three brothers whose lives are ravaged by war, and the chronicle of one family's struggle against the forces that threaten to annihilate it.

Howard says: "The Critics Got in Right"
    "Too much pain"
    Overall

This was too dark and not redemptive enough. I suffered through it but wish I had just given up. The readers were fine but the story laborious and painful.

His grandmother won't talk about it, but his grandfather reluctantly consents. The result is the captivating odyssey of two young men trying to survive against desperate odds. Where does Elegance of the Hedgehog rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

I have listened to this book at least 4 times and have loved it more each time. It is rich with physiology, surprises in plot and a dark side that continues to captivate and delight me. The readers are excellent and this book is an overall delight. Highly recommended

I have been waiting for Ann Patchett to write another incredible novel since Bel Canto, and this was it. After finishing it I went to Bel Canto for another read and found it just as delicious as the first time.

For the first four months of 1942, U.S., Filipino, and Japanese soldiers fought what was America's first major land battle of World War II, the battle for the tiny Philippine peninsula of Bataan. It ended with the surrender of 76,000 Filipinos and Americans, the single largest defeat in American military history. The defeat, though, was only the beginning, as Michael and Elizabeth M. Norman make dramatically clear in this powerfully original book.

I couldn't make it through this story as there was no redemption. If you want a great story of this point in history read Unbroken.

For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived...."

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Annie M. says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"
    "Kept me awake all night."
    Overall

This is a compelling story written with authenticity and candor. It was almost impossible to imagine that this story was real yet it was. I would read this as fiction but as a biography it is totally amazing. This is a must read!!! You will be amazed and inspired.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"

    Overall

Everything about this book I love. The writing is intelligent, the story gripping and the readers are perfect. I have read many books on my ipod but this is the first that has keep me up till 3 a.m. listening. There has not been one down moment, one dialogue I wish was written better or one plot twist that hasn't been perfect.
