  • The Bartender's Tale

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Ivan Doig
    • Narrated By David Aaron Baker
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Bartender' s Tale stars Tom Harry and his 12-year-old son, Rusty, who live alone and run a bar in a small Montana town in the early 1960s. Their lives are upended when Proxy, a woman from Tom's past, and her beatnik daughter, Francine, breeze into town. Is Francine, as Proxy claims, the unsuspected legacy of her and Tom’s past? Without a doubt she is an unsettling gust of the future, upending every certainty in Rusty’s life and generating a mist of passion and pretense that seems to obscure everyone’s vision but his own.

    "Such an enjoyable listen"

An engaging, well-written small town coming-of-age story taking place in 1960. I just love it when a great story is combined with a great narrator, this is why I love audiobooks.

  • The Kitchen House: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Kathleen Grissom
    • Narrated By Orlagh Cassidy, Bahni Turpin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

B.J. says: "Good, but with reservations"
    "It wore me out"

I’d give the first half four stars, and the second half two stars, for an average of 3 stars, honestly about 2.5. Overall this story was decent but hard to swallow on several levels, including difficulty with suspension of reader disbelief, as well as frustratingly repetitive examples of the extreme evil or naivete of the characters—by the end I wanted to scream at the author: “We Get It Already, He’s EVIL”. This book wore me out. But despite this, I would add that the audiobook narrators were both absolutely terrific.

  • Benediction

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Kent Haruf
    • Narrated By Mark Bramhall
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

From the beloved and best-selling author of Plainsong and Eventide comes a story of life and death, and the ties that bind, once again set out on the High Plains in Holt, Colorado. When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife, Mary, must work together to make his final days as comfortable as possible. Their daughter, Lorraine, hastens back from Denver to help look after him....

Adele says: "Another Home Run for Haruf & Bramhall"
"Another Home Run for Haruf & Bramhall"

I’m sure many will not exactly enjoy this story—it’s hardly something to take to the beach, it’s quite the opposite. The subject (a dying patriarch) and the aspects of the personalities visited in Benediction are relentlessly dark. But Haruf’s fictional Holt, Colorado and his characters are so real and so finely wrought as to be palpable. Mark Bramhall is the perfect narrator, he makes this novel into a work of art.

  • Listening Is an Act of Love

    • ABRIDGED (55 mins)
    • By Dave Isay
    • Narrated By Dave Isay

Drawn from the work of StoryCorps, the largest and most ambitious private oral history project in American history, comes this tapestry of the stories Americans have been sharing from their lives to leave behind to their loved ones.

    Debra says: "Touching"
    "Thank you, Audible"

This 1-hour gem was a "gift" from Audible--a free selection offered on Thanksgiving Eve. Because I was between books the day I received this, I listened to it that evening. What a wonderful concept Isay introduces, of making studio-quality recordings of oral histories for generations to come. I enjoyed every story. If this is, or will be offered in unabridged format or as a continuing series, I'll be first in line for all that come. Thank you Audible. What a thoughtfully timed gift to your customers.

  • Gone Girl: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By Gillian Flynn
    • Narrated By Julia Whelan, Kirby Heyborne

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

Teddy says: "Demented, twisted, sick and I loved it!"
    "Fun fun fun"
What made the experience of listening to Gone Girl the most enjoyable?

I'm normally not a big fan of psychological thrillers, but I totally enjoyed this one. This was especially well written, and both narrators were absolutely terrific, which added to my enjoyment. Highly recommend this.
