"Great, but where's the editor"
This book is one of my favorite so far. However, I found myself being taken away from the story every time one of the two actors mispronounced a word. Seriously, was no one listening? One of them is supposedly the most intelligent man in the world, it was so unbelievable that he would mispronounce coup de etat. This is the first time in quite a few books I've noticed such incredible errors.
"Beautifully Written, Wonderfully Read"
This book is amazing. I read a review which stated women don't think that way...and that person was right. All women don't. I did when I was the age of the main character. I found it very easy to believe in all of the characters of this book and lose myself in the story. It was beautiful.
And Steve Martin is truly the only person who could read the book. More authors should read their own unabridged works (ahem...Alan Alda, I'm looking at you).
"know who you're listening to"
It is important that, before you buy this book, you acquaint yourself with Sarah Vowell's singular voice. Having fallen in love with her on This American Life over the last few years, it would be impossible for me to hear anyone else read this series of stories, but I understand that it's easy to have a difficult time listening to her if it's your first time. To me, she sounds like an old friend, who's so excited about history that I'm engrossed in her stories.
