This is one of my favorite Nora Roberts love/mystery stories. I first bought is in cassette but eventually wore those out and had to buy it digitally. The main character and his supporting cast are colorful, deep and they use their brains for thinking, not just to wear extra warm headgear for the cold.

If you are looking for a book that you can listen to anywhere - this is it. There is humor, life, death, murder, conspiracy, and a crazy tow-truck driver. I would love to see this have a sequel so I could hear more about the Lunitics and their steadfast Chief of Police!

The descriptions of the town and the surrounding land and mountains is so detailed, that you often feel you are their watching the Northern Lights with the characters.

I was in the mood for an easy listen with a nice love story and good characters. This was more than that - it brought up some real issues, some thorny problems and real people having to deal with those problems in a responsible way. The voices for the boys weren't perfect but overall I thought MacLeod Andrews did a pretty good job. I found his voice easy to listen to, lulling in a soothing way, and I found that he did a good job putting the emotions of the moment into the story and I hope he narrates the next two. As for the story - this is a good one. And if you listen to the details of the Inn they are building, you will find that Nora's characters often sneak in her other characters and I found that delightful. If you are looking for a fast paced, action filled novel, then you will want to look elsewhere. This one flows well and keeps you interested, and it soothes the soul, but it's not my usual thriller read.

I'm writing because this book is not getting 5 stars across the board and I loved it. Somewhere, maybe in the introduction, the author says he made a list of things that scared him and put them together in a story. Perhaps I'm just afraid of similar things - driving over iced up rivers, blizzards, ancient stories of harm come to life, bullets flying and not killing the monster, and annoying t.v. crew people - they might be the scariest. I've recommended this book many times and have listened to it at least 5 times. The history and science is enough to spark the imagination and the characters are different enough to entertain and smart enough to work through their differences to stop the terrifying beastie.

I've often wondered which decision I would have made if I were them - flee with the ice trucker or hunker down with a machine gun and hope this time the bullets will kill off the monster.

Somewhere when listening to the book, you recall the title and wonder about that one word. When you've finished the book and think about it late into the night the title will finally come into it's own meaning. This book is not for the faint of heart and mind. It opens new ways of thinking and more complexities in what makes a killer, a cop, a parent and a victim. The story moves and has a great pace. The characters are interesting and vivid. I'm going to go see what else this author has written and get around to reading those books too.

I just love this character and this dog. I've not read them in order but each book stands on its own. The main character is just that - a smart mouthed, witty guy that happens to think outside the box enough to win. His support staff are unique and refreshing. Love the series for someone that bought the first one by accident!!
