Superb is the only word that suits. I've been hoping for this book to appeat in audio for years now, and happily this recording does not disappoint. One of the best Science Fiction (as opposed to the usual "sci-fi" trivia) books ever, and well narrated too. Hopefully this will sell like hot cakes and encourage Audible to continue with Beyond the Blue Event Horizon and the rest of the series.
    Well done Audible.

Harlan Ellison has won more awards for imaginative literature than any other living author, but only aficionados of Ellison’s singular work have been aware of another of his passions…he is a great oral interpreter of his stories. His recordings have been difficult to obtain…by his choice. In 1999, for the first time, he was lured into the studio to record this stunning retrospective.

I wish I hadn't wasted my credit on this reading. I forgot how irritating and grating Harlen Ellison's voice is. He may be one of SF's greatest writers, but he should let someone else read his stories. I barely lasted 10 minutes before his vocal gurning forced me to give up.

Deep in the labyrinthine corridors of Gormenghast Castle, a child is born. Titus, 77th Earl of Groan, is heir to arcane and all-embracing rituals that determine the activities of everyone from Lord Sepulchrave, his father, to the vast cook, Swelter, and the irrepressible Dr Prunesquallor. But not the steely and devious Steerpike, who will lie, cheat and even murder to get on. One of the greatest feats of sustained imaginative writing, the world of Gormenghast Castle is brilliantly realised in this darkly fantastic novel.

I love this novel, and indeed all the trilogy, so I was looking forward to a new reading. I was soon disappointed however. Within minutes, the silly voices and over acting began. Sadly I wasted a credit. The lesson learned? Check out the samples more thoroughly before buying. This reader should stick to his day job.

This author was new to me, as was the narrator,(though of course I remember his roles in Star Trek etc with fondness). Hope it won't be the last. The reading was clear and well punctuated with only minimal thespian over-indulgence. I only tend to write reviews if I have something to complain about or something to praise, happily, this is the latter. The book had me almost rolling on the floor in stiches, a rare event for a Science Fiction book, Audible Frontiers has come up trumps again, well done!

This sequel to the Hugo and Audie Award nominated METAtropolis features interconnected stories by today’s top writers of speculative fiction – performed by a galaxy of Star Trek stars. As the mid-20th century approaches, the Pacific Northwest has been transformed - politically, economically, and ecologically - into the new reality of Cascadia. Conspiracies and secrets threaten the tenuous threads of society. And the End of Days seems nearer than ever.

    Overall

I guess it's a penalty of getting actors to read books aloud, they often want to act. As a listener all I want is clarity and PUNCTUATION, both of which are in variable supply here. As an example, one of the most irritating things is where a reader changes scene without even pausing for breath, maybe they think that the dislocation is fun, but it's just annoying.

They first appear as a series of dots on astronomical plates, heading from Saturn directly toward Earth. Since the ringed planet carries no life, scientists deduce the mysterious ship to be a visitor from another star. The world's frantic efforts to signal the aliens go unanswered. The first contact is hostile: the invaders blast a Soviet space station, seize the survivors, and then destroy every dam and installation on Earth with a hail of asteriods.

Flatlander says: "Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle at Their Best"
"Yet again, great book, pity about the narrator"
    Overall

As with all Niven/Pournelle's collaborations, a great read, but sadly I was unable to finish the audio version because of the irritating reader. Too much acting and silly voices. Not enough punctuation. My star rating refers only to the reading. For the book itself I would give five stars.

For nearly a billion years, every known sentient species in the universe has been the result of genetic and cultural guidance - or "uplifting" - by a previously uplifted patron race. Then humans are discovered. Having already uplifted chimps and dolphins, humanity clearly qualifies as an intelligent species, but did they actually evolve their own intelligence, or did some mysterious patron race begin the process, then suddenly abandon Earth?

Late in the 26th century, the human race has advanced enough to accidentally trigger the Inhibitors---alien-killing machines designed to detect intelligent life and destroy it. The only hope for humanity lies in the recovery of a secret cache of doomsday weapons---and a renegade named Clavain who is determined to find them. But other factions want the weapons for their own purposes---and the weapons themselves have another agenda altogether.

    "Dissapointing, a missed opportunity :-(("
    Overall

I was looking forward to enjoying this book, I listened to a sample and concluded that the narrator had a nice clear voice, and the blurb seemed interesting.
Sadly I've given up on it.
This narrator reads the words totally deadpan, his punctuation is virtually non-existent, he moves from one storyline (or viewpoint) with barely a pause for breath, so one is constantly lurching from one storyline thread to another, having lost the plot, and this is a fairly complex book.
What i'm talking about here is the audiobook equivelant of a book printer using different fonts, italics, bold typeface etc to differentiate between storylines etc, as an aid to clarity and comprehension.
Some narrators go to the other extreme, trying to give every character his or her (or it's) own voice, and this can be irritating too, (check out Larry Niven's "Protector" for an example of what I mean), whereas for an example of best practice, check out WWW.Wake, by Robert J Sawyer, a model of clarity.
This is a missed opportunity because I guess that this book is unlikely to be re-recorded in a more sympathetic reading, so I'll never get to hear it or the rest of the series, (or indeed anything else by this narrator).

    AUDOOBOOK PRODUCERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!

The planet Majipoor is shared by humans and several alien races, including four-armed Skandars, three-eyed Liiman, and the native, shape-shifting Metamorphs. All are watched over by the King of Dreams, the labyrinth-dwelling Pontifex, and the priestess of the Isle of Sleep, while the Coronal officially rules from atop Castle Mount.
