The lead character was so dumb and so naive that he just got me too angry to listen beyond the first few hours. Chasing butterflies and saying prayers over the dead when he should have been high-tailing it from the Japanese.
The lead character.
Only the narration saved it, slightly.
First, good narration. But after that, this just droned on and on like a very long NPR special, the kind where a reporter is clearly enthralled with a boring town somewhere real people seldom want to visit, and you hear all the sounds of the place in the background drowning out the voice of the reporter. Too many sidebars that lost track of the story itself.. I gave up half an hour into part 2.
