  • Havana Nocturne: How the Mob Owned Cuba...and Then Lost It to the Revolution

Havana Nocturne takes listeners back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders Meyer Lansky and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Thanks to strong ties with the island's brutal dictator, President Batista, the mob soon owned the biggest luxury hotels and casinos and launched an unprecedented tourist boom. But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others.

Paul Abbott says: "Not for reactionaries"
    "too long and pompous"
    Overall

The narrator's voice is irritating and he sounds like he is pontificating.
The english grammar and use of language is poor; original work needs to be better written and more importantly, better edited. A third could have been cut which would have greatly improved the story. As a Canadian, I don't mind the left wing point of view but the author throws statements out without sufficient detail to support his arguments or further his story. This can be very irritating.

Plagued by rumors that she poisoned her fiancé, Lucinda Bromley manages to live on the fringes of polite society, tending her beloved plants - and occasionally consulting on a murder investigation. For the notorious botanist possesses a unique talent: she can detect almost any type of poison, especially ones that have their origins in the botanical kingdom.

    Overall

I was so looking forward to this book and after listening to it was disappointed. It is dull and lacks originality. Characters types, behaviours and descriptions are recycled from previous works with a different name pasted on. Plot points are reused from other books. Interesting concept anchors the series, but, author seems to have run out of steam and has difficulty executing. Been there, done that, bought the tshirt.

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

I love how Eve continues to grow (as a person) and within her relationships with other people. Great plot (I don't want to give anything away!)

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

Erica says: "Possibly The Best Techno-thriller Ever"
"good first book in a series"
    Overall

As I suspected this is the first in a series (see review on Amazon and www.thedaemon.com)and it is good. It sets the premise and creates a believable plot with reasonable characters for a thriller. Ends with many loose ends that will set the stage for the sequel "Freedom".

First time author who originally self-published is to be admired for the challenging topic. Unrealistic uses of police / fatal force and for crisis management teams.

Charles "Jay" Tice was a legend throughout the world of international intelligence. But secretly he was also a traitor, reputedly selling information that will seriously compromise the security of the United States for decades to come. Since his treachery was exposed, Tice has been kept under strict surveillance in a maximum security prison. Then one morning, his cell is discovered empty. Jay Tice has vanished - without tripping an alarm or leaving any trace of his passing.

A User says: "fast and furious"
"Story strong on cold war info;"
    Overall

This author is strong in the use of cold war assets and is most comfortable in the days before the Berlin Wall came down. Unfortunately, the period of time with the new Russia and break up of the Soviet bloc is not handled well and the plot of the novel flounders in this period. The resolution was too obvious.

Between avoiding the FBI and their moronic profiling computer, joining a dating service, mixing it up with street thugs, and parrying the advances of an uncouth PI, Lieutenant Jacqueline Daniels and her binge-eating partner Herb must catch a frightening maniac who calls himself "The Gingerbread Man" before he kills again...and Jack is next on his murder list.

Kari says: "Like the book but GRAPHIC details"
    "Not funny;Warning gory details."
    Overall

I had read a previous review indicating that this author was similar to Evanovich so I downloaded the entire series to listen to while traveling.

Unfortunately, while the stories are good, there are gory details that would come out of the blue and were very disturbing.

Didn't find anything worth giggling about. Story slow to develop.

Every day, we produce loads of data about ourselves simply by living in the modern world: we click web pages, flip channels, and shop with credit cards. Now, in one of the greatest undertakings of the 21st century, a savvy group of mathematicians and computer scientists is beginning to sift through this data to profile us as workers, shoppers, patients, voters, potential terrorists, even lovers. Their goal? To manipulate our behavior.

Stephen says: "Good but not the best of the genre"
"Fascinating way to look at detail"
    Overall

Author takes a challenging topic and makes it understandable to every one. Reader is excellent and is a good match to the material.
At this time of turbulent change, it is very thought provoking on how business and management could evolve.

Janet Evanovich is at it again! This time, Diesel makes an appearance just after Valentine's Day in order to turn Stephanie's world upside down. Filled with all the characters you know and love from the Burg, including Lula, Grandma Mazur, Connie, Ranger, Joe, Tank, Valerie, and Albert Kloughn, Plum Lucky is a can't-miss bestseller for Janet Evanovich's legion of fans.

    S says: "very entertaining"
    "No Joe nor Ranger"
    Overall

Stephanie pairs with a character from an early novel called Diesel in "Plum Lucky" and I found I really missed Joe and/or Ranger. A good read that amuses but I wouldn't rank it as one of my favourites. I'm not going to give away any of the plot but the antics are still as cute as ever. Written for St Patricks Day there may even be a leprechaun involved!

From coast to coast and around the world, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels continue to make best-selling history each summer. In the 13th book in the series, the stakes are raised even higher as Stephanie Plum finds herself in her most dangerous, hilarious, hottest, chase yet.

Kelly says: "Same flavor, different package"
    "Classic Stephanie"
    Overall

Wonderful book continues the long running Plum tradition for crazy hijinks with all of our favourite characters. Only one car gets to visit car heaven in this book. I'm afraid of getting into any detail for fear of giving way any plot points but suffice to say that there are many good laughs; Grandma has an incredible scene where she wants to be a rock n' roller; And of course Stephanie has her usual angst about Joe and Ranger. Who do you think she is going to end up with? Great book with many laughs that is the perfect reward for getting through one of *those* days.
