I love Historical fiction and this book covers a horrific little known story. Breaking the book between current time and historical time makes the book easier to read.

Maybe, I usually do not reread or listen to books a second time but this was such a well written and enjoyable book, I would consider rereading it. The Secret Life of Bees has so much wrapped up between the covers of this book that its hard to begin to appraise it. Sue Monk Kidd has tackled the race issues of the 50 and 60s head on in this book. But she does it in such a way that the emotions and tensions of the period are revealed harmoniously. Using a young white girl to reveal the suffering of the blacks during this period is a unique and enlighting way to get her point accross.

The most memorable moment of this book is when Lilly helps Rosaline escape from prison/hospital.

Rosaline was my favorite character.

Pat Conroy is the best at character development. His plots tend to go on too long and "The Great Santini" was one of the longer. I read "South of Board" and love it. It took me longer to get into "The Great Santini" but it slowly began to grow on me. I have the misfortune of knowing someone very much like the father (The Great Santini) in this book so I was able to relate to it very well. I love Conroy's ability to place you in the scenes, to understand what each of the characters are thinking and going through.

Yes. He's an excellent writer and even though his book are too wordy, they are well worth the experience.

Mary Ann, the older sister, was the most memorable character. She was the only one who did not let her father intimidate her, maybe because she was also the one most like her father.

Alan Brennert is an wonderful writer. In Moloka'i, he will bring you to tears as he weaves this heart breaking story. Most of the characters are well developed. His description of the Island of Moloka'i doing this period is excellent. This is a book that will remain with you forever.

I felt that this book lacked everything makes for good literature. It had a weak plot, poor character development, the author's research for the story line was not thorough. I read this book for a book club and the majority of my fellow members agreed with my assessment.
