In 1945, Elsie Schmidt is a naive teenager, as eager for her first sip of champagne as she is for her first kiss. She and her family have been protected from the worst of the terror and desperation overtaking her country by a high-ranking Nazi who wishes to marry her. So when an escaped Jewish boy arrives on Elsie’s doorstep in the dead of night on Christmas Eve, Elsie understands that opening the door would put all she loves in danger.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked how the characters developed. While growing their characters in the present tense and with sneaking glimpses of their past, we see how all of these experiences shaped the people they became--always evolving.

Which character – as performed by Elisabeth Rodgers – was your favorite?

Elsie-- strong and courageous during a dark time.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It was hard to put down.

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life - steady boyfriend, close family - who has never been farther afield than her tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life - big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel - and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy - but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected.

Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

Would you listen to Where'd You Go, Bernadette again? Why?

I probably will listen again (which I rarely do) just to see if I pick up on any clues earlier.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

    The blackberry bushes.....

What does Kathleen Wilhoite bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voices of the characters were perfection!

I loved it! It often made me laugh.

    Any additional comments?

This would be a fun book club book!

Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong....
