  • The Shipping News

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, The Shipping News shows why E. Annie Proulx is recognized as a gifted and original writer. When Quoyle, a 36-year-old, third rate newspaperman, learns that his two-timing wife has abandoned him and their two daughters, he returns to his ancestral home on the Newfoundland coast, to rebuild his life. We also recommend Proulx's, Accordion Crimes.

    "hauntingly beautiful"
    Overall

"The Shipping News" is a great listen. Annie Proulx (who, I just now realized, also wrote Brokeback Mountain) uses beautiful language to describe the smell and feel of her characters' environment. I just loved listening to it especially when I can't sleep. My only criticism is that it ends too abruptly.
"The Shipping News" is a book I could listen to again. I can't say that for the other Audible books I have downloaded. This is moody, serene and engaging novel.

  • The Likeness

Tana French's debut, In the Woods, hit the New York Times best-seller list and drew rave reviews from the Times (London) and Booklist. Picking up six months later, this riveting sequel finds Detective Cassie Maddox still scarred by her last case. When her boyfriend calls her to a chilling murder scene, Cassie is forced to face her inner demons. A young woman has been found stabbed to death outside Dublin, and the victim looks just like Cassie.

"Engrossing, but listen to In The Woods first"
    Overall

I have to admit that I am an easy critic, I enjoy most books on Audible. "The Likeness" was thoroughly engrossing for me as was "Faithful Place." I don't have anything to say compared with other reviews except that I recommend listening to "In the Woods" before listening to "The Likeness." The main character in "The Likeness" Casey, refers to working on the case in the book before and how "In the Woods" really affected her, but gives no details about it. Casey Maddox is a great character and it would be neat to know more about her background. "The Likeness" very psychological book. It was easy for me to overlook how improbable it would be to look exactly like another person because it made for such an interesting, deep and creepy story.
