This book may be an interesting read, but it was very bad as an audiobook. The British slang, mixed with spy jargon, and a complex plot with dozen of characters and names made it very difficult to keep straight. After listening to over 100 audiobooks, with was one of 3 I never finished.
READ THIS NOW. The book was fun and engaging and reminded me how much I love westerns (when they are done right).
There are some brutal scenes early in the book. Some of them were tough to get though, but necessary to understand some of the crucial plot elements.
The narrators did an amazing job. They were well selected and performed above expectations!
The story is very engaging and it was fun to see how the whole mafia obsession in our culture began.
The narrator did a great job of walking the line between bland and goofy voices.
Yes, Tina Fey doesn't just read the book, she performs it. Very entertaining.
She was truly funny and her delivery of some of the lines in the novel had me cracking up.
I listened to this audiobook while on a cross country road trip - it was the fastest 5 hours of the entire trip!
This book has definitely turned me OFF of Faulkner.
The plot is too thin and the chronology is so complex that is doesn't translate well as an audiobook.
Yes! The book is very boring and tedious (there is literally 5 hours of a woman taking care of poorly behaved children) and then there is no ending to the book! It just stops and basically says, "Buy my next book also to see what happens with the lady and the bad kids". I wish I had my time back!
Yeah, because the stupid thing didn't have an ending!
Well worth it!
The narrator for this book was amazing. He was able to give personalities to the dozens of characters in the book each with a unique European accent. Amazing!
There were all of these weird sound effects (wind whooshing over sand dunes - really!) and narrator changes that were not consistent throughout the book. It would have been much better if the primary narrator had just read the book the whole time.
Sometimes I felt a little racist listening to the narrators attempt at sounding like a poor black person. It was very well done, but I'm not sure if it SHOULD have been done...
It's way to much for one sitting and since the book doesn't really have an end, it's best digested in small pieces.
Sometimes the narrator will repeat sentences, paragraphs and even entire chapters in this recording. Very odd...
