The year is 1934. With the country in the stranglehold of drought and economic depression, Ella Barron runs her Texas boardinghouse with an efficiency that ensures her life will be kept in balance. Between chores of cooking and cleaning for her residents, she cares for her 10-year-old son, Solly, a sweet but challenging child whose misunderstood behavior finds Ella on the receiving end of pity, derision, and suspicion.

Enjoyed the story and the narration by Victor Slezak. I was mentally seeing a movie as the story progressed. Knowing there could be a sad ending didn't deter me from wanting to experience the story. I'm glad I did.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Hated for this story to end. I miss these ladies!! The story was told from a perspective I could personally relate to having grown up in Virginia during the 50s and 60s. My mother worked as a domestic for years. Great book, wonderful audio presentation.
