The death of Lord Edward Crick has unleashed a torrent of gossip through the seedy taverns and elegant ballrooms of Oxfordshire. Few mourn the dissolute young man - except his sister, the beautiful Lady Lydia Farrell. When her husband comes under suspicion of murder, she seeks expert help from Dr. Thomas Silkstone, a young anatomist from Philadelphia. Thomas arrived in England to study under its foremost surgeon, where his unconventional methods only add to his outsider status. Against his better judgment, he agrees to examine Lord Edward’s corpse.

The narration was as good as could be expected with this absolutely wretched prose. I decided I would give this a listen as I have quite enjoyed Simon Vance's readings. However, this book is just awful. The characters are flat, the plot is not remotely clever and again, the descriptions are ridiculous.

Just spare yourself. It's a cool concept, but someone other than Tessa Harris needs to execute it.

C.J. Sansom's Matthew Shardlake mysteries whisk listeners back in time to the tumultuous court of King Henry VIII. Shardlake has his hands full this time defending a young religious fanatic who has been thrown into Bedlam. On top of that, Shardlake's friend is murdered, and the quest to find the killer leads Shardlake right to the steps of the king's latest romantic conquest, Catherine Parr.

While some of the themes in the Shardlake series are a bit repetitive, they don't become annoying tropes. They become traits of characters that seem knowable. C.J. Sansom has created a lovable and flawed cast of characters. His attention to detail translates well to the audio versions of his books.

The plot twists are relatively clever. What keeps me coming back for each installment in this series is Shardlake and the other characters that Sansom has created. Good plot lines, great characters. I look forward to Shardlake's return.
