  • A Tale of Two Cities [Recorded Books]

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs)
    • By Charles Dickens
    • Narrated By Frank Muller
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..." So begins this classic, one of the most beloved novels of all time. Charles Dickens brings the French Revolution to life through such vivid characters as Charles Darnay, the Old Doctor, Sydney Carton and Lucy Manette. The action peaks with the storming of the Bastille, the dreaded symbol of government authority. And the blade of La Guillotine falls again...

"Absolute literature...and a page turner at that!"

This is my first time reading/listening to this famous novel. I was amazed at the gracious style that flowed and was so descriptive yet kept you entertained all the while. These characters became my friends and enemies and were a part of me for the 2 weeks it took to finish this in my car. It has all the excitement of a best seller drama yet at the end of the novel I was changed. That is literature.

The narator is absolutely excellent. His personas assumed throughout the peice were consistent and superb. This is a 10/10 and a must get!

  • Robert Ludlum's The Arctic Event: Covert-One Series

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By James H. Cobb
    • Narrated By Jeff Woodman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Lt. Col. Jon Smith, an army research doctor and secret agent attached to Covert-One, is tapped to lead a team to Wednesday Island, an icy patch of land between the northern coast of Canada and the Earth's magnetic Pole. There, the remains of a mysterious plane were discovered during a routine educational expedition. The plane seems to be a Russian spy plane, and the Russian government secretly revealed to the U.S. president that a lot of very dangerous anthrax may be on board.

    Bob Wagner says: "Exciting!"
"It's Covert One... What dya expect?"

Ok, so you get this because you want to zoom off and hold an AK-47 and sneak around with an international group of killers with some morals or outstanding patriotic quality. Here's another example. Shakespeare it aint. Harlequin it aint. Ludlum it is, and if that's what you're looking for, check this one out.

  • Body of Lies: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By David Ignatius
    • Narrated By Dick Hill

Roger Ferris is one of the CIA's soldiers in the war on terrorism. He has come out of Iraq with a shattered leg and an intense mission: to penetrate the network of a master terrorist known only as "Suleiman". Ferris' plan for getting inside Suleiman's tent is inspired by a masterpiece of British intelligence during World War II: he prepares a body of lies, literally the corpse of an imaginary CIA officer who appears to have accomplished the impossible by recruiting an agent within the enemy's ranks.

    Michael says: "Body of Lies"
    "Baahhh...wasted time"

Narration was about a 2/5. Not the best. Accents change and you can't tell which Arab character he's referring to at times. The story was about a 1.5/5. Politically motivated (which has nothing to do with the plot), unbelievable and predictable at times. There's one real sappy, whiny, dull CIA protagonist and he should have died at the end assuring us of no more from this man. I hope the terrorists are as dumb as the book portrays.

  • Marker

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Robin Cook
    • Narrated By George Guidall
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Twenty-eight-year-old Sean McGillin is the picture of health, until he fractures his leg while in-line skating in New York City's Central Park. Within 24 hours of his surgery, he dies.

Martin says: "A bit too predictable"

Fastforward to 2 hours 54 minutes and the story begins. It crawls at times and at other times just darn silly. The whole plot, some HMO wanting to OFF patients, was rather old. The only prophetic portion is that the human genome will change our future. Leave this on the shelf.

  • The Secret Life of Bees

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Sue Monk Kidd
    • Narrated By Jenna Lamia

Lily Owens has shaped her entire life around one devastating memory - the day her mother was killed. When she and her "stand-in-mother," a fierce-hearted black woman named Rosaleen, are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily enters a secret world of bees and honey, and of the Black Madonna who presides over this household of strong, wise women.

France says: "Secret Life of Bees"
"Secret's for women ...not for men."

Chick book... definitely! I mean no disrespect to the writer nor those who found deep resonance with the protagonist. But, no man will wander past 1 hour 33 minutes without saying, "Shoot...there goes another book credit..." What was I thinking.

  • Mountains Beyond Mountains

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Tracy Kidder
    • Narrated By Paul Michael
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Pulitzer Prize-winner Tracy Kidder tells the true story of a socially conscious genius who uses his intellectual and personal gifts to solve global health problems.

    MikeInOhio says: "A Great Book"
    "Preferential Option..."

This is a truly amazing story. All will find it hard to put down. It explores human conditions: health, suffering, hunger. It is about one man's fight against one evil: poverty. I am a conservative, Family Physician who does mission work in Central and South America. This has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans. It is about humanity, and one incredible man's preferential option for the poor. A must read for all.

For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come.

Timothy says: "One of the Best Stories I've Ever Heard"
    "Fun..quick...worth the credit..."

This was a fun, quick and great spy novel. I was amazed at the concise, accurate characterizations. Well researched but not boring. Reader was excellent (which is 60% of any audiobook). Never dull. My tastes are rather eclectic, but everyone will like this classic espionage paperback. Get it today.

  • Winnie-the-Pooh: A.A. Milne's Pooh Classics, Volume 1

    • UNABRIDGED (2 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By A. A. Milne
    • Narrated By Peter Dennis
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Come with us to an Enchanted Place, a forest where Winnie-the-Pooh lived with Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Eeyore, Kanga, and Little Roo. The stories are about Christopher Robin and these good companions having wonderful times getting in and out of trouble. It is all very exciting and, really, quite thrilling no matter how young or old you may be. It is painful to try and imagine what the world would be like without them.

Richard says: "A man's best friend is a bear called Pooh"
    "Piglet is the BEST!!"

This is a must have for any family with children 3 years and above. The stories are wonderful and voiced so well. You cannot help but laugh aloud each time Piglet talks. Great fun for all! Replayability? Definately... requested almost nightly by our boys.

  • Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Steven D. Levitt, Stephen J. Dubner
    • Narrated By Stephen J. Dubner

Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? What kind of impact did Roe v. Wade have on violent crime?

Shane R Massey says: "What it's really about"
    "Refund please..."

Ok... Imagine reading the USA Today front page polls for 6 1/2 hours, and then call it science. That is what Levitt has accomplished here. Lots of correlations, or rather, possible correlations misconstrued into causality, with an authoritarian punch. The appeal to authority fallacy from Login 101 is found throughout this work. Interesting? Yes at first. Like the USA Today polls and horoscopes. But not for 6 1/2 hours and not from an economist who is merely dabbling in sociology with the wrong tools.

  • Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Anne Rice
    • Narrated By Josh Heine
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Having completed the two cycles of legend to which she has devoted her career so far, Anne Rice gives us now her most ambitious and courageous book, a novel about the early years of Christ the Lord, based on the Gospels and on the most respected New Testament scholarship.

    R. Moore says: "A tad short of excellent"
    "Well done, Ann!"

Refreshing! As an historical novel, it deserves a solid 4 stars. The reader was excellent (which is 60% of every audible selection). The story was cohesive and entertaining. The characters were believable. To the skeptic: this is a novel and not a dissertation. Remember that and you will enjoy it. Why not 5 stars? Jesus cries too much. The family laugh was nice, but a bit overdone. And the long after thought by Ann Rice was ...well... long. Don't read it before hand as suggested by others. That will ruin the "novelty" of this novel.

  • Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Hijacked the Bush Presidency

    • ABRIDGED (4 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Patrick J. Buchanan
    • Narrated By Patrick J. Buchanan

American Empire is at its apex. We are the sole superpower, with no potential challenger for a generation. We can reach any point on the globe with our cruise missiles and smart bombs, and our culture penetrates every nook and cranny of the global village. Yet our beloved America is now reviled abroad, dictated to by arrogant judges at home, overrun by special interests, and buried beneath a mountain of debt.

Stephen says: "Wow what a read!!"
"A 4 year review of Bush...a must read"

No matter if your are firmly of the Democratic or Republican field, this book is worth the listen. It defines "neocons" once and for all. He makes a plausible link between the trade deficit, unbalanced budget and Iraq. New lines are drawn between conservative, neoconservatives, liberals and the farther left outlining the political camps for 2008. And once and for all, it is a political book written by a scholar not a newscaster, comedian or reporter. It's Pat Buchanan so expect the angle to come from the right, but dont let that stop you. I gave 4/5 because it is abridged...
