"excellent all round"
Bernard Mayes deserves the highest accolades for his narration of this masterpiece. His reading is itself a masterwork!
"let it flow!"
The narration is flawless. NOT too fast... NOT mumbled...excellent modulation and everything...
The audio quality is excellent.
The writing is fascinating. It is not a novel which you try to "follow". If you do , you end up writing a negative review of it. The style is stream of consciousness, so you just let it flow in, through and around you.
I could never have read through the whole thing, so I'm grateful for this wonderful recording.
"Keeps going and going and....."
It's ironic that at least twice in this book Friedman decried those bloggers and other content uploaders who click the send button before checking what they have written. This book is in desperate need of a good editor who would tell Friedman things like,"You've already made this point." or "That metaphor was clever only the first time you used it" or "I don't think we need yet another example" or, "Let's cut out this kum-ba-ya moment."
There is plenty of good insight and commentary in this book, for example when he explains his concept of Islamist-leninism. However, there is a lot of repetition. I almost screamed as he went through the creation of his personalized Dell computer describing where each and every part of the computer had been manufactured and how it was assembled. The point he was trying to make was a good one, but it had already been made clear before.
I would recommend this book in its abridged version as there is just about 10 hours of worthwhile material in it. And that good material is very good.
"Blown away!"
Superb! What a fantastic experience! Excellent narration. All the themes of life are painted so vividly for the mind's eye by Tolstoy and the reader Nadia May. And to top it all off you get the meaning of life in the last chapter.
"thoroughly satisfying"
I downloaded this volume not with little trepidation having read the negative reviews. THANK YOU to the one reviewer who gave it five stars encouraging me to make the purchase. This work is a masterpiece. Of course it contains mountains of information which to some listeners may seem a little dry,at times but this is a six volume project afterall. I found all the information pertinent to the story of who this man was. I never knew he had a quite compassisonate view regarding the crime of beastiality. (I never knew he even had a view regarding that) but it comes out in the review of his legislative work for Virginia. And the description of the special status and treatment of several captured war enemies ties in with the present situation of special status criminal in our present war.
The narrator is excellent! It's true that she tends to swallow the end of some of her sentences, but never to the degree that I couldn't undertstand the words. Her cadence, intonation and pronunciation I found to be right on target.
This is a very thorough biography which I found thoroughly enjoyable. I'm tempted to not wait until my next monthly credit and go ahead and purchase the next volume now.
"disappointing"
I wish I had been warned that this is not a serious book. I found it in the Historical Fiction category and was looking forward to being transported to 12th century England for the 40 plus hours of the reading.
I thought I would get some insight into the way of life and way of thinking of that early period.
Unfortunately the characters are extremely flat and no atmosphere is ever created.
This book would be more correctly placed in a Romance/Fantasy/Erotica category.
The writer's style reminds me of Muzak, elevator music. It does have its place and it's a kind of music but... This is probably not a book you want to spend money on.
"extrememly entertaining"
What a fun summer listen! All the elements are there: bigger-than-life heroes and anti-heroes; a super buffoon who is more than meets the ear; pseudo-psychology and philosophy; and sticks in the eyes of all of us, regardless of nationality or gender. I had never been spelunking before, but now I've "done" a killer cave twice guided skilfully by Trevian. Download it. Have fun.
