I cannot decide which I hated more: the plodding, pedantic narration or the plodding pedantic writing. I usually love Regency romances and I was looking forward to a series but this one is horrible and absolutely humorless. It is as if the Author tried to lengthen the book by stating the obvious over and over again -- And just in case you didn't get it the first time, she repeats what the characters are thinking a chapter later. No one can be as stupid in real life as the shallow characters Balough has concocted for this book. Save your money!! This book makes Georgette Hyer seem like Shakespeare.

I bought this book based on the reviews. I am pretty easy to please and was just looking for a fun, well written thriller. For example - I love Georgette Heyer. THAT is just how easy I am. But I digress: this book is banal, annoying and predictable. The fact that I am taking time to write a review (which I almost never do) just shows how irritated I was with this book. I knew who the bad guy was the first time he was introduced into the story.

The best thing I can say is that this book would make an excellent drinking game! Read the book and take a shot every time Eve says "I'm a cop, dammit". You'll be drunk by the third chapter. If you are under 35m in excellent physical shape and a heavy drinker, add the additional challenge of taking a shot every time Rork gets horny just from looking at the prickly Eve. You'll be in the hospital with an IV drip for alcohol poisoning by half way through the book. Enough said.

I started the second book because all the reviews told me not to judge the series by the first book but I was so annoyed by the same old "I'm a cop, dammit" stuff that I could not get beyond the third chapter. The only interesting part about these books is the fact that the author sets them in the future. It's fun to see how a guy as rich as Rork spends his money on luxuries.

Not insult my intelligence and stay away from cliches

Nope. Her nasal, unemotional voice made me crazy.

I would tell the author that the idea is sound but the characters need to be fleshed out and three dimensional.

This is the first book by Orson Scott Card I've read and I will definitely be reading more in the future. A fun spin on the old Sleeping Beauty story told with humor and depth. The narrator did a wonderful job with the characters and accents. It starts a bit slow but keep going -- definitely worth the wait once the story gets going.

Unusual, gripping and well narrated. I love this book and have purchased the two sequels as well. Highly recommended!!

Diane Setterfield puts a new spin on the gothic novel genre and the result is excellent. The mystery behind the story is well thought out and I can honestly say that I didn't anticipate the conclusion to this one. Stormy nights, wind swept moors and a mad woman in the hidden room. Perfect. The herione is young,thin and overly sensitive in the style of a classic gothic narrator and the references to gothic novels like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights show that the author is acting with intention. One of the few humorous moments is when the doctor gives the heroine a Sherlock Holmes book and basically tells her to lighten up and stop immersing herself in gloomy liturature. All in all, an excellent read.

I like most Neil Gaiman stories and enjoyed this one. Nice atmosphere and story. The author does an excellent job of narration.

If you like Georgette Heyer, you'll love this one. I was a bit surprised when I saw that the narrator is a man but his characterizations fit the story well and he did a very nice job of it.

Elizabeth Peters is one of my favorite authors and she almost always delivers. Naked is entertaining and the ending is a surprise, which is always fun.

This is the sequel to the The Girls with the Dragon Tatoo. It starts slow and takes a while for the story to mesh but its a great read. The narrator does a fabulous job with all the characters and accents.

It is always such a treat when a great book is read by a talented narrator. The book is a brilliantly cynical parody of the 80's and Joe Barrett is one of the best narrators I've heard. He vocalizes each character so distinctly that sometimes it's hard to believe it is the same man. One of the best recorded performances I've ever heard and as soon as I finish this review, I'm going to see what else he's narrated and buy them all.
