This superbly told story brings to life one of the most remarkable rulers––and men––in all of history and conveys the drama of his life and world. The Russia of Peter's birth was very different from the Russia his energy, genius, and ruthlessness shaped. Crowned co-Tsar as a child of ten, after witnessing bloody uprisings in the streets of Moscow, he would grow up propelled by an unquenchable curiosity, everywhere looking, asking, tinkering, and learning, fired by Western ideas.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

The book if a full and colorful history of Peter the Great. Frederick Davidson is one of the best narrators I have ever listened to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No. It's very long.

  • Mao: The Unknown Story

Based on a decade of research and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before, and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him, this is the most authoritative biography of Mao ever written.

What would have made Mao better?

The book is so biased against Mao that it raised skepticism in my mind regarding it validity. There is a great deal of unnecessary description of gory punishments. Given that they happened more than 40 years ago, it is unlikely that the authors actually validated them. They appeared to overstate them to sell more copies of the book. That aside, Robertson Dean did an excellent job of narration, as he always does.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jung Chang and Jon Halliday again?

    No.

Set amid the corrupt glamour and multiplying intrigues of Alexandria, Egypt, in the 1930s and 1940s, the novels of Durrell's Alexandria Quartet (of which this is the first) follow the shifting alliances - sexual, cultural and political - of a group of quite varied characters. In Justine, an English schoolmaster and struggling writer falls in love with a beautiful and mysterious Jewish woman who is married to a wealthy Egyptian.

In all of the years that I have been a member of Audible.com, I have never listened to a book that was better read than "Justine." It is beautifully written, and Jack Klack's narration is even better than the written word. I am anxious to move on to "Balthazar" which he also narrates. He is sensational.
