I read, almost exclusively, with audio books. I listen while driving, walking the dog, exercising, and doing chores (love multitasking!).

  • Something Rotten: A Thursday Next Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Jasper Fforde
    • Narrated By Emily Gray

After spending her time chasing a stray Minotaur into pulp Westerns, filling in for Joan of Arc, and raising her infant son, Friday, Thursday needs a break in the real world. But her return to Swindon is far from relaxing. Rogue fictioneer Yorrick Kaine and the evil multinational Goliath Corporation are trying to rule the world, and a deadly assassin called the Windowmaker is tracking Thursday's every move.

This book is provided by Recorded Books not Highbridge Audio. I suspect that's why the narrator is different. Too bad - Elizabeth Sastre had it down pat!

  • The President's Pilot

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Robert Gandt
    • Narrated By Thomas Block

A year and a half into her first term as President of the United States, Libby Paulsen is in a world of trouble. Her controversial agenda has placed her in a doomsday clash with a right wing cabal led by an enigmatic Air Force general. The conspirators will stop at nothing - including assassination - to remove Libby Paulsen from office. When the cabal targets Air Force One, Libby's Presidency - and her life - rest in the hands of a maverick pilot named Pete Brand, a man with whom the President shares a long-smoldering secret.

Matthew says: "Gives a whole new meaning to Snakes on a Plane!"
    "Good action, bad narrator"
What made the experience of listening to The President's Pilot the most enjoyable?

The action scenes involving the plane.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The President's Pilot?

Probably won't remember much - just an action/triller that keeps your attention.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was the worse narrator I can remember listening too. He sounds like he has a speech impediment (like he's drunk and slurring his words). The main reason I'm writing the review is to caution people to listen to the sample prior to buying.

  • Deception

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Denise Mina
    • Narrated By Richard Matthews

From Scotland's most exciting up-and-coming mystery novelist comes a story of Lachlan Harriot, a man who refuses to believe his wife, Susie, is a killer, even though she had been working with Andrew Gow, a paroled serial killer, as his court-appointed psychologist, when she was found covered in blood near the spot where his and his wife's bodies were discovered. Desperate to clear his wife's name, Lachlan searches her home office for proof of her innocence.

Julie Campbell says: "Realistic and riveting"
    "give this one a pass"

This book is written in journal format. The main character isn't very likable, and he and the others (his wife, the person killed etc.) aren't very interesting. It is the only audiobook I haven't listened to all the way through (and I've listened to many!) The narrator did a very good job, but even he couldn't create interest out of this book.

  • The Good House

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Tananarive Due
    • Narrated By Robin Miles
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Tananarive Due, author of The Living Blood won the American Book Award and is praised as Stephen King's equal by Publishers Weekly. In The Good House, Due sets a story of ancient powers and modern retribution in a small Pacific Northwest town. When a young woman returns to her grandmother's empty mansion, she is pitted against demonic forces that have poisoned her family for generations.

    Rebecca says: "FABULOUS!"

This is a wonderfully written book with a great narrator. Thank goodness it was 21 hours long - I didn't want it to end. Enjoy.

  • The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel

    • ABRIDGED (9 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Jasper Fforde
    • Narrated By Elizabeth Sastre

Great Britain, circa 1985: time travel is routine, and literature is taken very, very seriously. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, Special Operative in literary detection. But when someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature and plucks Jane Eyre from the pages of Bronte's novel, Thursday is faced with the challenge of her career.

    Susan says: "What a gem!"
    "This is a wonderful book"

You'll really enjoy this story. It has elements of a spy story, science fiction, and fantasy rolled into one fun and believable plot. With Elizabeth Sastre's narration, it's even better to listen to than actually read. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
