I enjoyed the story and am so thankful not to be in the main characters position. What a horrible life to lead, being a young girl growing up in family that would be willing to marry you off to your own 60 year old uncle.
Although this book was not what I was expecting, it was worth the time and money. I recommended it to a friend and forewarned her it was totally different than anything I had listened to before, and to beware that it takes a strange and crazy turn right out of the chute! It was a book I won't soon forget.
I'm sure this would not be a book I'd ever reread but it did pass the time. If you are listening to this and doing nothing else the characters are probably easier to keep track of. I found the story to be rather drawn out.
I listened to this book in one day not wanting to put it aside for even a moment. Granted it wasn't anything to expand your mind, but when it comes to a little mystery and romance it was very good.
I definitely recommend this book. The narrators were very authentic sounding, and having so many character's voices made it much more enjoyable to listen to. I couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next, the story was captivating. I think the author did a great job letting us into the lives of the "colored people", as well as Eugenia's perspective of a very frustrating and unfair time in history.
