  • The Signal and the Noise: Why So Many Predictions Fail - but Some Don't

Nate Silver built an innovative system for predicting baseball performance, predicted the 2008 election within a hair’s breadth, and became a national sensation as a blogger - all by the time he was 30. The New York Times now publishes FiveThirtyEight.com, where Silver is one of the nation’s most influential political forecasters. Drawing on his own groundbreaking work, Silver examines the world of prediction, investigating how we can distinguish a true signal from a universe of noisy data.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

people interested to hear about past events but not necessarily in a fun or entertaining manner

Has The Signal and the Noise turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but it did turn me off from this writer

    Any additional comments?

Very long details about historical events and how people failed in predicting them, which is quite obvious, since if those events were predicted they wouldn't have happened. It's good Audible has 2X speed so I was able to reduce my time wasted listening to this book. In short it's a book that has no added value whatsoever.

  • How the Stock Market Works

This course is an introduction to the stock market and stock investing for novices and experienced investors alike. Professor DeGennaro uses simple analogies to explain the origin of stocks and other securities, as well as their relative risks. He stresses the danger of trying to beat the market by trying to pick winners, predict price trends, or otherwise find opportunities that other investors have missed.

Excellent. The material is progressively more complex and useful. One remark I have about the efficient market. The evidence shows that IPOs underperformed the overall market for the 2 to 3 years following going public. Doesn't that refute the efficient market hypothesis? Showing those stocks makes money, therefore.

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn't be this way. There is a formula for success that's been followed by the icons of history - from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs - a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Give examples from everday ordinary folks trying to enhance their life rather than extreme examples as US prersidents or popular enterpreneurs like Steve Jobs. We don't wanna become another Steve Jobs or the president of the USA.

What was most disappointing about Ryan Holiday’s story?

    the conversation at the end

Have you listened to any of Ryan Holiday’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Obstacle Is the Way?

Bestselling author, speaker, and world-traveling success coach Jen Sincero cuts through the din of the self-help genre with her own verbal meat cleaver in You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life. In this refreshingly blunt how-to guide, Sincero serves up twenty-seven bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, life-changing insights, easy exercises, and the occasional swear word.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you believe in "I am connected to the source energy at the same frequency", or "love yourself and you will have it all" or "using low-class language makes me seem cool and funny", or "the universe wants you to be happy", or "buy the expensive Audi on credit, and the money will automatically flow your way", or you like silly humor ...then this book is for you.

If you're a sophisticated, pragmatic person, who believes in using the existing reality you're living in to your advantage and taking calulcated risks and introducing real long term solutions to achieve your goals, I recommend you find other self help books.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Nothing from this author

How did the narrator detract from the book?

    Trying to be funny constantly

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Ridicule
