Times are hard for newly minted vampire Merit. Ever since shapeshifters announced their presence to the world, humans have been rallying against supernaturals---and they're camping outside of Cadogan House with protest signs that could turn to pitchforks at any moment. Inside its doors, things between Merit and her Master, green-eyed heartbreaker Ethan Sullivan, are tense.

    Story

I must admit, I have mixed feelings about this book. I really enjoyed it until the very shocking plot twist at the end. Then it was sad and the story ended on a sad note. I reeeally had to think about it before getting the next book in the series. On the one hand, it's nice to be surprised by a plot. On the other hand, arrrgggh! In real life, sometimes bad things happen. But aren't fictional books about escaping from reality or taking a vacation for a bit? Hmmm. This is why I have mixed feelings. I was finally curious enough to get the next one. I'm hoping things will brighten up a bit for Merit (I know, dark vampire books). Hopefully some humor or romance will be included.

They call me the Spider. I'm the most feared assassin in the South -- when I'm not busy at the Pork Pit cooking up the best barbecue in Ashland. As a Stone elemental, I can hear everything from the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet to the vibrations of the soaring Appalachian Mountains above me. My Ice magic also comes in handy for making the occasional knife. But I don't use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.

    Story

The first part of this book gets started pretty slowly. The narrator talks slow, and it takes a bit for the story to get going. But stay with it! Once it gets moving a little, the story and narrator pick up pace. We start out getting hints of the main character's (Gin's) past, and get to know more and more of her a bit at a time. Meanwhile, she faces interesting adventures. In book 2, the hints and adventures continue.

The books have a unique set of characters, & provide a different and interesting use of dwarves, giants, vampires, & magic. This is the first book I've read with people as elementals, so I'm not sure how they compare to elementals in other books.

I'm glad a sale prompted me to take a chance on this book. I'm almost done with book #2 in the series - Web of Lies, and I just purchased book #3 - Venom. I'm looking forward to continuing the story.

"I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds. Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked."

    Story

Even if I'm not totally happy with a book, I usually stick it out to see how it ends. Listening to this book made me feel angry, anxious, and frustrated. I finally quit half way through.

The culture of the shifter world in this book is fairly oppressive to women. The main character has run away from home multiple times looking for freedom and privacy, and the men (father, brothers, pack members) find her, drag her back, jail her, and guard her 24 hours a day. They finally let her go to college. Now they've dragged her back home again.

The main character is whiny, argumentative, and immature - even after going to college, getting her bachelors degree, and moving on to more college. She gets into trouble. The men punish her. They push her around and treat her like a little girl at 23. She wants to be treated like the men, but acts like a child. It's a dysfunctional and frustrating cycle.

The description for future books in the series hint at her becoming an "enforcer" for the pack. I was holding out for that thinking the story would improve, but I couldn't make it.

Yuck. I'm glad I bought this book on sale. Not even worth the $4.95.
