Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

    Any additional comments?

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, [The Company] can also be read as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says Publishers Weekly.

If you could sum up The Company in three words, what would they be?

I enjoyed the story of how the CIA began from the 1940's to now. The book is written intelligently and the writer made it interesting to listen to. Good Story

The Good House tells the story of Hildy Good, who lives in a small town on Boston's North Shore. Hildy is a successful real-estate broker, good neighbor, mother, and grandmother. She's also a raging alcoholic. Hildy's family held an intervention for her about a year before this story takes place - "if they invite you over for dinner, and it’s not a major holiday," she advises "run for your life" - and now she feels lonely and unjustly persecuted. She has also fooled herself into thinking that moderation is the key.

Rhonda Morrison says: "What a great book, Hildy is a great character!"

What did you love best about The Good House?

Being raised by an alcoholic mother, I did not expect to love this character but I did. This is a great story that makes you love this woman even with what she does. Hearing the book from her perspective is a new and wonderful experience. The fact that she does not see her drinking in the same way as her daughters and friends was very interesting.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

I put off reading this book for quite awhile because I lived through those years and did not want to be reminded of the wrongs that white people did to black people. I finally listened to the book and was hooked from the beginning. I loved the fact that different people read the story and put their own mark on the characters. They did a great job and I continue to listen to it over and over again. Great book.

Now this was a different story than the Virgin River series but a great story that I have listened to several times. A good love story and all the characters are great. I would recommend this book to all my friends.

What does Therese Plummer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love listening to Therese Plummer. She makes you believe each character is a real person.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The love story between the four main characters was terrific.

In a town like this, it's hard to keep a secret - but Dr. June Hudson has managed to keep one heck of a humdinger….
