I was an avid reader of books before my work took most of my time so now I listen to Audible books when I'm exercising or walking my dog. I like mystery and thriller novels, particularly good serial killer novels. I'm a writer and a psychotherapist.

Already on edge with the upcoming trial of the See- No-Evil killer, residents are shocked by reports of the crime scene, which might not have been discovered for days had it not been for a chilling 911 call: a small child's voice saying, "My daddy hurt my mommy."

It's a shame when I can't get past the narrator to listen to the book because I have no choice but to give the entire book one star when it might be a really good book. I just can't manage to hang in there when the narrator makes me want to stop listening altogether.

Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever, and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent - and nearly five million souls in the United States alone - the disease causes "Lock In": Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.

Medical examiner Maura Isles connects the case to a number of seemingly unrelated deaths where the victims have all been found hanging upside down, the hallmark of a leopard's kill.

When he was the NYPD’s top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know. He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers - by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed. Except what if, one day, there wasn’t?

I was amazed that I'd never heard of this author before because the book was terrific. Full of suspense, never boring, ending completely unexpected. I'll look for more books by this author.

On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

NIGHT FILM begins fast paced and intriguing. It stays that way but about halfway through I noticed that the action was decreasing as the protagonists thoughts and philosophy were focused on more. Two thirds of the way through the book I began fast forwarding and didn't miss a thing except more of the protagonist's dramatic monologue.
By the time I reached the end of the book I kept waiting for a twist for something to lift up the story and create a compelling climax and satisfying end. It was painful right up to the last minute because that never happens.
Pessel is a promising writer. Once she figures out how not to get lost in her own story she'll produce a robust story from beginning to end.

Art critic Jeremy Grove is found dead, his face frozen in a mask of terror. His body temperature is grotesquely high; he is discovered in a room barricaded from the inside; the smell of brimstone is everywhere... and the unmistakable imprint of a claw is burned into the wall. As more bodies are discovered - their only connection the bizarre but identical manner of death - the world begins to wonder if the Devil has, in fact, come to collect his due.

I was completely engrossed in this story, so much so, I hurriedly went online as soon as it ended and purchased the next in the series, only to discover that I wasn't ever going to find out how Pendergast escaped and I didn't remember who had different colored eyes so there was no help there. I was so disappointed after starting the next book and discovering I was never going to know, I came back online and reduce my rating of the story from five down to one. If Pendergast weren't the mail protagonist maybe it wouldn't matter but in this story it matter. I am very disappointed that the book didn't develop a complete conclusion.

    Story

I've listened to a few novels byJD Robb recently. I think I'm done listening to her because there's nothing remotely interesting about the protagonist and her husband having sex every day in every way with each encounter detailed to the point that I finally figured out I could fast forward and save myself the exasperation of wondering why the reading had to know every touch, every kiss, every groan, every orgasm, in every way possible. Really? All Roark has to do it touch Eve and she has an orgasm that leaves her shakking but not finished. I mean shouldn't he have to do something besides lay his hand on her?
Eve being abused as a child doesn't give her carte blanch to be caustic and rude to everyone around her, even her friends and husband. The story lines are shallow and the plot needs more development. There are some interesting moments but Robb needs to use the sex spaces to develop more intrigue and deeper writing.

I would have given this book five stars. I am generous with stars because really good listens are hard to find. However, Ms. Brown seems to think that describing sex acts between the characters in long, drawn out detail to the point that I started fast forwarding and had to do that several time to get past the entire scene, is erotic. It's not erotic, it's distracting to the storyline, unnecessary, and maddening to wait for the action to begin again. I don't care exactly how he touched her nipple with what fingers in the midst of her gasp, etc. etc. etc. It's a distraction, especially since there are many sex acts in the book, between the same two people. Dick Hill learned how to make his female characters sound real instead of brain dead twelve years old and that's a big improvement and welcomed.

The first few paragraphs are interesting. It goes downhill from there. After forty-five minutes of listening I couldn't take it anymore. It's a long narrative about what the protagonist is and isn't doing. Save your credit. The narrator was pretty good.
