  • A Lion Among Men: The Wicked Years, Volume 3

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Gregory Maguire
    • Narrated By John McDonough
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

While civil war looms in Oz, a tetchy oracle named Yackle prepares for death. Before her final hour, a figure known as Brrr - the Cowardly Lion - arrives searching for information about Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West. Abandoned as a cub, his path from infancy is no Yellow Brick Road. In the wake of laws that oppress talking Animals, he avoids a jail sentence by agreeing to serve as a lackey to the warmongering Emperor of Oz.

Michael says: "Gregory and John Together Again"

OOOoh this book was so disappointing to me. I know it is about the "Cowardly Lion" but my god this thing is whiney and depressing. ALL the charecters in this book are completely self-absorbed and "whoa is me". It doesnt do "Wicked" justice at all.

My advice, skip this one - you wont learn anything new about Elphaba or Glinda and it doesnt continue the story from "Son of a Witch" except to give a brief overview of what happened in that book and supposition at the VERY end of the book. BLAH what a waste of time

  • Ready Player One

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 46 mins)
    • By Ernest Cline
    • Narrated By Wil Wheaton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Travis says: "ADD TO CART, POWER UP +10000"
"Best book Ive read/listened to all year!!!"
If you could sum up Ready Player One in three words, what would they be?

    Gamer Geek 80sgasm

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wade of course, because its told entirely from his perspective so he's the one you are most invested in.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I cant say because it gives entirely too much away. Lets just say the entire final challenge.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Spoiler: One of the charecters dies and the retelling and description of the death is very sad.

    Any additional comments?

If you were a teen in the 80s, played D&D, Atari, coin op arcade games, loved John Hughes movies, or are en enthusiast of any of it, THIS is the book for you. Cant wait for the movie!

  • A Fistful of Charms

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Kim Harrison
    • Narrated By Marguerite Gavin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her - not necessarily in that order.

David Olszewski says: "Lots to like, but some complaints"
    "My Fave Thus Far"

Loved this one, really brings the relationship between Ivy and Rachel forward, explains the dynamics between them better from Ivy's perspective. If you love Jenks though, THIS is the one to read!!!

  • Swallowing Darkness: Meredith Gentry, Book 7

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 41 mins)
    • By Laurell K. Hamilton
    • Narrated By Claudia Black
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

"I am Meredith, princess of faerie, wielder of the hands of Flesh and Blood, and at long last, I am with child twins, fathered by my royal guard. Though my uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, claims that he is the true father since he abducted me from my home, betrayed, and defiled me. And now he has branded my guards as a threat to my unborn children."

Kristy says: "Story is great, narration was not so great"
    "Pleasantly Surprised"

I have to disagree with the criticisms of Claudia Black's narration. I have read all of Laurell K Hamilton's books, so had been anxiously awaiting these audio versions and started with the Merry Gentry series since its shorter. I loved Laurel Merlington's narration and yes after so many books in a row with her voice I too was worried about suddenly having Claudia Black narrating. However I LOVE Claudia Black (Farscape's Aeryn Sun, Stargate SG1's Vala Maldaran) so I gave it a shot.

I admit it took about an hour for me to get used to her since I literally went from "A Lick of Frost" to this while at work, but then it was fine. I adjusted to the accent easily because I always imagined the charecters would have European accents, except for Merry, anyway. And she did a good job doing the American accents for solders and the different accents for Red Caps, goblins etc.

ALSO this book was written MUCH better than previous books. I mean how many times has can you read "It was as if...." "It was like....". You can definately tell how much Laurell K Hamilton has grown as a writer listening to all the books one right after another. Good book, I hope there are more but I'm on to Anita now!!!

  • Twilight: The Twilight Saga, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Stephenie Meyer
    • Narrated By Ilyana Kadushin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

About three things I was certain. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him, and I didn't know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Bryan J. Peterson says: "A waste of my time this wasn't."
    "Darkly romantic"

I REALLY enjoyed this book. Though it seems to have been written to be a Young Adult novel, it is smartly written, and detailed enough to draw in and capture the adult reader as well. I felt connected to Bella's teen angst, and reminded of my own first love by the descriptions of her experiences of Edwards touches, kisses, etc. However it still has the energy and mystique of the world of the vampyre. What a mix the romance and desperation of first love, with the passion and dark excitement of the vampyre genre.

I cant wait to read the next book, New Moon. Thankfully, Stephenie Meyer has vowed to continue the series.

  • Dreaming the Eagle

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Manda Scott
    • Narrated By Josephine Bailey

In 33 A.D., the 11-year-old Breaca (later Boudica, or "Bringer of Victory") longs to become a Dreamer, a mystical leader who can foretell the future, but, having killed her mother's killer, has proven herself a warrior. Dreaming the Eagle sweeps from the turmoil of battle to the intimacy of Boudica's loving relationship with her brother, Ban; from the fight for honor to the magic of an animistic natural world that speaks back to the Celtic tribes.

    Liza says: "FANTASTIC!!!"

This book was a great surprise. I read reviews of it on Amazon, which were not as good as I hoped for given the content, but got it anyway and am I ever pleased. The story grabs you right at the beginning and tugs at your heart strings (listen to the sample). I listened to the whole thing in like 4 days at work, just couldnt wait to hear what was going to happen.

The story is equally split between the lives of the main charecter Breaca and her brother Ban, and the narrator does a great job of changing her voice to suit the different charecters so you know right away which is talking when. Best of all you really get invested in them. I cant tell you how many tears I shed. Charecter development is fantastic as well.

Celtic myth enthusiasts, particularly those who know the "old gods" and the legend of Boudica, who enjoy a good retelling with the author's personal flair, will love this book. And men, the book is inundated with battle scenes, in "graphic" detail - so theres much there for you too. :)

Audible when are you getting the sequel "Dreaming the Bull"? :)

  • Stranger in a Strange Land

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Robert A. Heinlein
    • Narrated By Christopher Hurt
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Stranger in a Strange Land tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, an earthling born and educated on Mars, who arrives on Earth with superhuman powers and a total ignorance of the mores of man. Smith is destined to become a freak, a media commodity, a scam artist, a searcher, and finally, a messiah.

Connie says: "Enhanced version seems to correct audio defects"
    "Pagans take note"

I read this book as a teen in the 80s and BOY did I not have a clue. What an eye opener this book can be into the soul of man! As a Pagan in today's society, with full knowledge of the Church of All Worlds that exists today, not only do I see how this book influenced what is modern Wicca and Paganism today ("Thou art God", modern polyamory, etc) but I see how it will continue to influence generations to come with its ideas of a society free from jealousy, who can learn to be "water brothers" with loyalty and honor unsurpassed.

Heinlein's insights into the psychological makeup of humans in the early 60s, when this was written, is no different than who we are today. We still use humor to help us deal with "wrongness" and sadness. We still shun any person who dispays a "difference". Maybe if more generations read it, more will come to "groc in fullness"

Pagans might want to read it around the time of Lughnasadh to Mabon, the Sacrificed King implications are great.
