In The Story of America, Harvard historian and New Yorker staff writer Jill Lepore investigates American origin stories - from John Smith's account of the founding of Jamestown in 1607 to Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural address - to show how American democracy is bound up with the history of print. Over the centuries, Americans have read and written their way into a political culture of ink and type. Part civics primer, part cultural history, The Story of America excavates the origins of everything from the paper ballot and the Constitution to the I.O.U. and the dictionary.

I am a fan of Professor Lepore and read her articles in the New Yorker. All but one essay, and the introduction, are reprints from that magazine, I believe. The stories are engaging, and her prose style is very easy to following. I am not a huge fan of the narrator, Colleen Devine. I cringe when she mispronounces such words as Edinburgh and stave. She did, however, guide me to the correct pronunciation of Jacobian. I thank her for that. I have listened to many narrators, and have my favorites, like everyone else,

Inextricably linked with the fatwa called against its author in the wake of the novel’s publication, The Satanic Verses is, beyond that, a rich showcase for Salman Rushdie’s comic sensibilities, cultural observations, and unparalleled mastery of language. The book begins with two Indians plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their airliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.

Where does The Satanic Verses rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love this author and I love this performer.

Have you listened to any of Sam Dastor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

Rushdie is very funny and insightful. Like all good works of literature, deserves multiple reading and need to read lit crit.
