What is at stake is far from insignificant: it is how one should live one's life. Plato's The Republic is widely acknowledged as the cornerstone of Western philosophy. Presented in the form of a dialogue between Socrates and three different interlocutors, it is an inquiry into the notion of a perfect community and the ideal individual within it. During the conversation, other questions are raised: What is goodness? What is reality? What is knowledge?

While I have read this title before I wanted to enjoy it again via audio presentation. I would have enjoyed better character separation during the heavy Socratic questions suggestions still not a bad overall performance of a masterpiece of a favorite topic.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Anastasia Burke says: "Hillenbrand could make even laundry fascinating!"

So many men would have been broken, more would have been bitter, this story should be read to every boy that thinks of joining the service, this and Johnny Got His Gun. However, Unbroken is so much more powerful because it is real.

Well written, well read, and solid telling of the life of a man that was a man among men in a time of heroes.

One night when he was 10, Tyler stood in his backyard and watched the stars go out. They flared into brilliance, then disappeared, replaced by an empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

In David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell challenges how we think about obstacles and disadvantages, offering a new interpretation of what it means to be discriminated against, or cope with a disability, or lose a parent, or attend a mediocre school, or suffer from any number of other apparent setbacks. Gladwell begins with the real story of what happened between the giant and the shepherd boy those many years ago.

While it may not change your mind it will make you think about your beliefs and challenges you to view opposing mind sets. I enjoyed how he brought up many common ideas and asked you to view them from another point of view. His questioning of some issues may be uncomfortable; but isn't learning something new always uncomfortable?

    Well read and well written.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

First let me say I was shocked that this download was only one credit!! Be that as it may this was a wonderful presentation of the Bible and well worth the investment of the 96 hours to listen to, ponder, and review. The background sounds, different voice performers, and overall production is awesome. To use a phrase it was ". . . the Word made flesh." I could see returning to this production over and over and being able to pick it up anywhere and enjoy it.

So many great things to say but I have only one misgiving. I wish in this format there was some easy way to bookmark and return to each book for review. If there is a way please let me know.

Few novels have had as profound an impact on American culture as On the Road. Pulsating with the rhythms of 1950s underground America, jazz, sex, illicit drugs, and the mystery and promise of the open road, Kerouac's classic novel of freedom and longing defined what it meant to be "beat" and has inspired generations of writers, musicians, artists, poets, and seekers who cite their discovery of the book as the event that "set them free".

Oddly quirky at times with the 80/20 rap but still an important business read and would suggest this title for all recent college graduates. This book still maintains an important and relevant message about business that needs to be understood by all leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs.

Renowned poet and critic Clive James presents the crowning achievement of his career: a monumental translation into English verse of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy is the precursor of modern literature, and this translation - decades in the making - gives us the entire epic as a single, coherent and compulsively listenable lyric poem. Written in the early 14th century and completed in 1321, the year of Dante’s death, The Divine Comedy is perhaps the greatest work of epic poetry ever composed.

In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

While I enjoyed the story I was stunned by the voice work on this book. Story was interesting mid-60s fair with the idea that the moon was only years away from full on colonization. Technology will require a bit of overlooking but the Botany Bay approach to the story keep me interested through out.

Why we think it’s a great listen: If you’ve ever loved a dog - or even patted a dog - this book, told from the perspective of man’s best friend, will tug at your heartstrings...and won’t let go until long after Welch performs the last word. Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively and by listening very closely to the words of his master.

This story was predictable, easy to read, and filled with obvious corny relationships. And I loved it! Well written, heartwarming and enjoyable as a read and a listen. The voice work was awesome and made me laugh out loud more than once.
