"Fun but predictable"
This book was so predictable I didn't need to finish it. I enjoyed it mostly, but didn't like the far fetched plausibility of some things for the times. I'm not putting this one on my "I should have skipped" list because it does entertain and isn't a waste of time.
"Fun, Fun, Fun"
It wasn't a typical vampire story. It took the weak heroine and turned her into her own hero with a funny story line and interesting supporting characters.
The characters were fun, diverse and very interesting. The funny things that happen to them made listening and being quite difficult at times!
Betsy. Her males have a little to be desired but they are okay.
Yes. I listened to it one sitting.
I enjoyed this story. It wasn't a serious vampire story dripping with cliche and lore. The character was weak by design but was actually more brave than she or anyone else thought she was. She was a vampire most people could identify with. In short, this wasn't your typical Twilight knock off. I was very glad for that!
"Good, but not great"
I would definitely read another story from both MaryJanice Davidson or Nancy Wu. I love Betsy. I love this story. Somehow, this one didn't leave me as excited as the first. It was a good performance but the problem for me lies in the "already been there" in book one story line. I will listen to more in the series, but won't hold on for much hope as far as a different experience story wise!
Yes, Betsy is a breath of fresh vampire so to speak!
She brings voice to the characters that I think suits them, but she could do better with males! Her reading style is easy to listen to.
Yes, I see this as a movie or tv series and I could've seen Alicia Silverstone doing this, but now it would have to be a younger actor with her acting chops. Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Sophia Robb, Ellen Page or Dakota Fanning.
Great story, but lacks interesting adventure. I love Betsy's character still stays true to herself throughout the story. I really wish the books were much longer!
"Limited vocab, awful story and weak characters"
People who enjoy Twilight or don't care if characters have personalities, depth or a background. People who do not mine horribly childish descriptions repeated throughout a book. People who do not mine their authors with no sense of story telling. I think young girls will like this book.
Something cerebral, my brain needs to recover.
The narrator was fine. I think she fit the style of the weak "heroine" of the story.
Not one that I could think of. Thank goodness it was short.
The repetitive terms really angered me. It told me this author has a very limited vocabulary and the characters were as flat as cardboard so that tells me the author has no imagination. I really wish I would have paid attention to the reviews. I tried this in book form first and thought it was me. After trying it in audio form, I know it's not!
"Lord John is the most interesting character!"
I would recommend this book to all of my friends because we are all mostly fans of Diana Gabaldon's
Diana is a crafty author and she makes spins and turns everywhere in her series. There were quite a few unexpected twists and turns and outcomes that I was glad of.
Lord John. He does such a great job bringing him to life and is the most consistent with all of his characters. I don't usually like to listen to male narrators, but thankfully this has changed thanks to Jeff Woodman.
I did want to listen to this book non-stop because I always wanted to know what mess Lord John was going to get into (and how he got himself out of it) next.
Great story, good plot, questions answered and CLOSURE. This book has closure on the plot (something many have lacked that I have listened to of other authors). These books are not for the person not willing to go outside their comfort zone (and even squirm) in certain situations.
"I loved it... Mostly"
Listening to the book was exciting. I kept expecting some big revelation to come or some major event to happen. Besides (no spoiler from me) what happens to everyone in the book, there was no major excitement. The characters were enjoyable, interesting and the story line was very interesting.
The characters in the village and their relationship with each other were most interesting and memorable.
I have never listened to this narrator but I can surprisingly compare her to my two favorites: Davina Porter and Geraldine James.
Most definitely would see this if it were a movie!
The ending was disappointing. Nothing happened, just death and a miraculous rescue. The book should have been longer. It should have included scenes of what happened and should have closed the story line for the missing character that was mentioned many times in the book. How did that get overlooked? The ending baffled and sort of angered me. I wanted closure on many things and it just didn't happen.
"Adventure, Romance, History and great storytelling"
Diana Gabaldon writes a very compelling, exciting and historically accurate portrayal of life in the 1700s. Her use of language, custom, scenery and mannerisms are right on and make the story come to life. Her books are not for the week of heart or mind and I love her for it. This is my third time revisiting this book and I love the audio version. It is exactly how I imagined it as I was reading it the very first time. I've met Diana on two occasions and she is as an amazing story teller in person as on paper!
"Would be perfect without the Twilightness"
This novel is very well written in parts and in some parts, not so much. The story is rich, brilliant and well thought out. The parts that bothered me were the parts that look like they were straight from twilight (glowing skin, weak heroine). Then there was the part that tried to hard (dinner, wine) that nearly caused me to throw my iphone out my window. I'm glad I didn't because once I got beyond that pretentiousness, the rest of the story was brilliant and left me wanting more. I agree with others that the ending could have been better. The great thing about brilliant series authors is they leave you wondering if there will be another book in a series. This one leaves you knowing that there will be. I'm sure she will work it out because I REALLY like this author!
