One of the most important and blazingly original writers of his generation, George Saunders is an undisputed master of the short story, and Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet. In the taut opener, "Victory Lap", a boy witnesses the attempted abduction of the girl next door and is faced with a harrowing choice: Does he ignore what he sees, or override years of smothering advice from his parents and act? In "Home", a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned.

I bought this yesterday, listened to it yesterday and am starting over again today. I love these stories.

Some of the stories kind of remind me of a Wes Anderson script, but darker- dry, smart, funny...and I loved hearing him read the stories, I think, had I read them myself, I would have had a different interpretation on some. He writes like I speak, but smarter.

Anyway- I loved it, listening again and I'm sure I'll listen many times over, and buy the book so I can underline clever sentences- the writing is just wonderful- so much to love about this book :)

Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront.

My favorite parts of American Psycho were the fashion & food commentary, beauty tips, and updates on the Patty Winter Show. The murders were pretty hard to listen to- way over the top. Still- I really enjoyed this book and the characters- the reader was great too!

But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before really going belly-up.

    Story

I started this book a couple of months ago, stopped, started, stopped, started- it was pretty sad in the beginning, and I couldn't stay with it.

BUT when I came back to it a third time nicer things started happening. I can't remember exactly what Mr. Pucci says, but something about finding happiness and letting yourself be happy. That's pretty nice. I ended up really enjoying this book and the characters (except for a few characters who remained real jerks). ha :)

Oh- and there was something that comes back around towards the end of the book which is fun- I thought- "gah- should have seen that coming", but it happened so long ago it didn't register until she mentioned it, but it was a great element to the story.

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries....

Sometimes you just want to hear a fun story and this might be it. No, it's not literature- it's not complicated or even well written...ok, that sounds snotty, but I don't mean it to be.

I bought this from the Audible daily sale and I've listened to it in between this and that- when you want to cook or do something else, or just get away from the crazy deep story that you're listening to- it's a fun one! I might even buy another as this Atticus sounds so cute :)

I liked this story--- creepy and fun and mysterious. It was so long though that I'd find myself zoning out often. I also can't tell you how many times I'd think "oh good! ____ is going to happen!" and then nothing would happen and I'd be disappointed- ha.

Still- good story- fun listen- oh and getting the pdfs was really fun too- don't forget to look at those :)

Some Talisman, some Gunslinger and lots of other characters combine to create a really creepy, interesting tale about a town, a child killer, a hero, and "other worlds than these". I started this before I read the Talisman, so I stopped it and listened to The Talisman first, then started Black House over. I loved it...

Also, I swear that I could listen to Frank Muller read anything -so fun!

Jerene Jarvis Johnston and her husband, Duke, are exemplars of Charlotte, North Carolina’s high society, a world where old Southern money and the secrets behind it meet the new wealth of bankers, real estate speculators, and carpetbagging social climbers. Steely and implacable, Jerene presides over her family’s legacy of paintings at the Mint Museum; Duke, the one-time college golden boy and descendant of a Confederate general, whose promising political career was mysteriously short-circuited, has settled into a comfortable semi-senescence as a Civil War reenactor.

This is not going to be a helpful review because honestly, I'm still not sure how I feel about this story. Some parts were boring, some parts were interesting. I liked some of the characters, hated others. The ending was not great, but the reader was good and I loved the book cover...

Probably would not recommend unless you are interested in the history of the South.

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

I'm kind of conflicted here, because I enjoy Stephen King's stories and I LOVED the Shining. This story had a lot to live up to, and at least in my mind, really didn't. I mean, I liked it. I listened to all of it (and I'm the first person to abandon a book that I don't like much). I just didn't think it was that scary. Still, it was fun to remember Danny (who now looks like Jax from Sons of Anarchy we're told- and that can't be bad- hahaha) and Tony and the Overlook Hotel and I enjoyed some of the new characters as well.

Credit worthy? Yes. Just not a story that will haunt me or that I'd want to listen to again.

Utina, Florida, is a small, down-at-heels southern town. Once enlivened by the trade in Palm Sunday palms and moonshine, Utina hasn’t seen economic growth in decades, and no family is more emblematic of the local reality than the Bravos. Deserted by the patriarch years ago, the Bravos are held together in equal measure by love, unspoken blame, and tenuously brokered truces.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?
