Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

The newest novel from #1 New York Times best-selling author and "queen of royal fiction" (USA Today) Philippa Gregory tells the passionate story of Elizabeth of York, daughter of the White Queen, who gets caught in the middle of a battle for the crown of England. A princess from birth, Elizabeth fell in love with Richard III, though her mother made an arranged betrothal for her with the pretender to the throne: Henry Tudor. When Henry defeats Richard against all odds, Elizabeth has to marry the man who murdered her lover in battle.

I loved all of the Philippa Gregory books and this is no exception. She has a wonderful way of teaching history through her fiction and I was sorry to get back to where I began in the series. Although I started later and went back to the books that came before I loved everyone. Highly recommend this series to lovers of historical fiction and strong women!

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

What made the experience of listening to Outlander the most enjoyable?

The narrator is perfect and her ability to change voices for each character is not a distraction like in some books. Additionally, the story line is unique but gives me the historical storylines I love. The characters are well rounded and the pace is just right. After completing all the Phillipa Gregory books I was looking for something as good and I think I found it. Different, of course, but it kept my interest (considering I listen 2 or more hours a day during my commute) and I am on book 2 now.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Claire is my favorite character. She is a strong, caring woman dealing with the cards she has been dealt with grace and wit.

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys, Amir and Hassan, growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

Would you listen to The Kite Runner again? Why?

I would definitely listen to this story again. It was a poignant and honest tale of how our jealousies and fears cause us to do things we are ashamed of but that we sometimes get the chance for redemption. I loved the book and highly recommend it and A Thousand Splendid Suns.
