  • Parable of the Sower

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By Octavia E. Butler
    • Narrated By Lynne Thigpen

God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

David says: "A dystopian vision of collapsed America"
    "Parable of the Sower (Unabridged)"

This is an interesting book. It starts out OK, a little hard to follow though, since it takes place just 10 or so years from now. The world is much different! The book never pays off... An interesting concept and good imagery... Worth a listen, but not for-filling in the end for me.

  • 2666

    • UNABRIDGED (39 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Roberto Bolaño
    • Narrated By John Lee, Armando Durán, G. Valmont Thomas, and others

Composed in the last years of Roberto Bolaño's life, 2666 was greeted across Europe and Latin America as his highest achievement, surpassing even his previous work in its strangeness, beauty, and scope. Its throng of unforgettable characters includes academics and convicts, an American sportswriter, an elusive German novelist, and a teenage student and her widowed, mentally unstable father. Their lives intersect in the urban sprawl of Santa Teresa - a fictional Juárez - on the U.S.-Mexico border.

    Nancy Bauer says: "Brilliant"
    "2666 By: Roberto Bolano"

Bolano's writing is quite hypnotic, his ability to keep the reader / listener engaged and waiting in anticipation of the next word is truly magical. His goal of writing a "work" of substance and girth was certainly achieved, however it was disrupted by untimely circumstance. The book is incomplete, thus the 3 star rating.

  • Hit Man

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 49 mins)
    • By Lawrence Block
    • Narrated By Robert Forster
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Keller possesses all the qualities of a professional killer. He's cool, confident, reclusive, icy, and ruthlessly efficient. But this seasoned hit man is also prone to self-doubt as he finds himself caught in the clutches of a mid-life crisis.

Barbara A. Russell says: "Surprisingly Terrific"
    "Hit Man (Unabridged)"

Hit Man is an interesting book. One would think this to be a morbid tale of gruesome killing and debauchery, when actually Lawrence Block writes a story that is very human and compassionate. At least from the killers perspective and the readers as well, after all we each have our job to do. I recommend this book, the price is right and Robert Foster does a fantastic reading.

  • Kill the Messenger

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Tami Hoag
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

At the end of a long day battling street traffic, bike messenger Jace Damon has one last drop to make. But en route to delivering a package for one of L.A.'s sleaziest defense attorneys, he's nearly run down by a car, chased through back alleys, and shot at. Only the instincts acquired while growing up on the streets of L.A. allow him to escape with his life, and with the package someone wants badly enough to kill for.

    Bethany says: "An entertaining read"
    "Kill the Messenger (Unabridged)"

This is a fantastic book... One of the best stories I've ever heard --- Brilliant story line with great, likable, dynamic characters --- Told in kind by an equally gifted reader.
