The set-up of Mark Haddon's brilliant new novel is simple: Richard, a wealthy doctor, invites his estranged sister Angela and her family to join his for a week at a vacation home in the English countryside. Richard has just re-married and inherited a willful stepdaughter in the process; Angela has a feckless husband and three children who sometimes seem alien to her. The stage is set for seven days of resentment and guilt, a staple of family gatherings the world over.

I could not stay focused on this story. It was like trying to listen to the insane internal ramblins of several people all at once. UGH! To bad because I am a big fan of "The curious incident of the dog in the night" by Mark Haddon and i was so looking forward to another story by him.

Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

    Story

Struggle is the word that comes to mind. Downer is another. I don't want to be insensitive. There are some very serious issues discussed in this novel. Global warming, farms across USA, unfulfilled lives, dead end marriages, education, small town life, faith, just to name a few. From the start it was so disappointing to listen to the author narrate her own book. Lets just say, maybe someone else could have done a better job. So sorry just my opinion. I will say if the whole point of this book is to preach and bring awareness she did not miss her mark. Don't get me wrong this book is very well written. In many ways it is brilliant. It just left me exhausted and depressed.

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life - steady boyfriend, close family - who has never been farther afield than her tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex-Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life - big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel - and now he's pretty sure he cannot live the way he is. Will is acerbic, moody, bossy - but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected.

while the subject is a sad story, the story it self is told in a positive and upbeat cadence. Loved the way Jojo Moyes draws you into the characters by way of the hopeful voice of Louisa. Her personality and character are her only qualifications when interviewing for a job as a companion. She has no real isight and certainly no experience in dealing with a paraplegic, yet she is the perfect choice. I was invested in the story from the very beginning. The narrator was also and excellent choice. The unexpected change in performer was an interesting change of pace that brought layers of depth to a track already in motion. I could not stop listening and missed it when it all ends...

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Why do we keep coming back to Nora Ephron Heartburn? Because it's a timeless, witty, laugh out loud, sad and real story. If you saw the movie, you know how good the story is. If you know nothing about it, just enjoy the surprise of listening to this amazing actress read the story. If you read the book, listen to Meryl Streep read it to you again. Trust me she does a much better job than you could ever do. The recipes peppered into the story are a real bonus. The carefully guarded secret recipe for vinaigrette is excellent not to mention the peach pie...yummy

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Do not miss this one! I almost did, but kept it on my wish list for all the rave reviews. It's not my subject matter so I hesitated far too long. Im not one to play video games or a big fan of sci-fi and you don't need to be one to enjoy this book. The author does a fantastic job taking you into the future, into this world of life in a virtual reality, like you are watching a movie and its very exciting. All the 80's references are a walk down memory lane. If you are like me a child of the 80s you will enjoy reminiscing on the place and time when all this went on. If you are younger, then you will certainly enjoy a place where past and future are brought together into a story you can relate.
The narrators voice was perfectly cast for the roll. His fresh sound and easy cadence was a welcome sound into my ear buds.

Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack is a letter addressed to Harold from a woman he hasn't seen or heard from in 20 years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. Harold pens a quick reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then Harold has a chance encounter, one that convinces him that he absolutely must deliver his message to Queenie in person.

The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Yes it is a love story, in fact many different ones woven in the tale. So beautiful it makes you ponder the tittle. The characters are so well developed you wish you could meet these people. Some you want to put your arms around, and some you want to kick. The author transports us semlessly betwen the past history of the characters and present day.

Charles Frazier puts his remarkable gifts in the service of a lean, taut narrative while losing none of the transcendent prose, virtuosic storytelling, and insight into human nature that have made him one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in the world. Now, with his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape....

I think this will be one to go to the top of my favorites list. The characters while appearing simple in their ways of life, are so relatable. The author does a great job of bringing them to life. The performance was one of my favorites parts! Im not so sure reading this book would be as enjoyable as listening to it.
