"Masterfully done and lovely story"
No doubt, the narrator Christine Williams made this one of my favorite audiobooks. Her voice is so soothing and she captures all emotions perfectly without over-dramatizing it. Lily is a simple teacher who gets caught up in a loveless marriage through a fluke and is now committed to a man who loves another. But Jakob has integrity and gives their marriage time to enter into a different phase as they get to know each other and learn love. They treat each other with respect, and each conflict is resolved with love and understanding, that it's clear they love each other, but they don't seem to know it.Beautifully told story. Well worth it!
Jakob was my favorite. He was so conflicted, but he handled so much of his topsy-turvy life with dignity.
Christine is now my favorite narrator by far. I could listen to her read the dictionary and thoroughly enjoy it! Soothing, so very well read. I don't think any other narrator could read this or anything else as well.
Well, I nearly did. I stayed up until 2am listening and anywhere I went in the car, my iPod went with me to listen while I drove.
"Wonderful cap off to great books"
I had hoped for a sweet conclusion to difficult relationships and Ms. Bergren did not disappoint. There was still plenty of conflict, but happy endings are always great.
"Love Lee Child, but..."
Of course this book is well written, and Dick Hill did just the BEST job reading it, but I have a problem with what happens in the book. As often is the case, Reacher is the target of some evil people, due to his being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Usually his way of getting out of it is to kill the bad guys, but usually it's when he's about to be killed himself, i.e. self-defense. But without giving away the book, what bothered me was, at the time he got rid of the evil parties, they were awakened from sleep, were running away, and he murders them, and encourages another innocent to murder another. I can't abide by that. If they were gunning for him and the others at the time, no problem. But this was revenge murder. Didn't like that at all.
Sorry Mr. Child, that part of the book was not to my liking.
